(NICK) SPECIAL DELIVERY (USA) GREATEST SPORTS LEGENDS (WGN) MOVIE "Lad: A Dog" (1962) could have played the role just as well. He said Jackie Gleason and Mickey Rooney were once sought to play Archie. It's doubtful if either star could have played old Archie as well.

O'Connor's dedication has given birth to an American classic in Bunker. Viewers have lived through good times and bad, funny times and sad, with old Archie. His pain is theirs, his small victories and humiliating defeats have been shared by millions. He is a surrogate uncle to many. "I've tried never to let the character off the mark, and I think I've pretty well succeeded," O'Connor said.

"I'm willing to question everything for realism to keep Archie on the rails: "It's surprising how many men tell me with pride that people call them Archie, and others say Archie is exactly like their fathers. "Viewers don't get tired of Archie because he's always doing something people know about. We don't use outrageous situations, like having Archie find himself in a space capsule. Ours is comedy of the eminently possible, common and ordinary." Many shows grind to a halt whey, writers run out of comic ideas resort to outlandish slapstick and outrageous premises. O'Connor, who is story editor of his show, says "Archie Bunker's Place'' has no such problems.

"We deal with the ordinary events of life and Archie's nutty way of solving problems. There's no problem bad that Archie can't make it worse." NBC Movie on Cocaine HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Karen Grassle, who starred for years in TV's "Lirtle House on the Prairie," will co-star with Dennis Weaver in "Cocaine, One Man's Poison," a two-hour NBC-TV movie. The story, to be telecast March 6, deals with a real estate broker, played by Weaver, who becomes addicted to cocaine to bolster his confidence in the face of business and personal problems. Daily News TV critic Stuart D. Bj kof-sky visits the Richard Hayes radio show tonight on WWDB-FM (96).

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) "Archie Bunker is still the same old bigot he was a dozen years ago and he's not about to change," says O'Connor who plays the dyspeptic misanthrope with unalloyed glee. O'Connor's series (Sunday nights at 8 on Channel 10) is now in its 14th year, the longest running situation comedy in TV annals, not forgetting Lucille Ball whose marathon show was actually three different series. During the noon break recently in a rehearsal hall at CBS Television City a catered lunch was served cast, writers, director and producers. A warm camaraderie filled the room as lasagna and fried chicken were devoured. In the thick of things was O'Connor, 50 percent owner of the show (the other half owned by Tandem) and the most popular individual present.

O'Connor is everything Archie is not, cherubic, good hatured, politically liberal, intellectually sharp and, of course, a multimillionaire. The success of "All In The Family" for nine years and "Archie Bunker's Place" for four seasons is clearly lodged in the person of actor O'Connor. The series has survived the loss of five major characters, played by five memorable performers Jean Stap-leton, Sally Struthers, Rob Reiner, Martin Balsam, Ann Meara without a hitch in popularity. This month "Archie Bunker's Place" was riding high in 14th place in the Nielsen ratings. O'Connor is doubly reponsible for his show's longevity.

It's not only his personal popularity. Norman Lear, who based the show on the English sitcom "Till Death Do Us Part," sought to kill the show after nine years. O'Connor was determined to carry on, even when Lear insisted the title be changed. Otherwise, it would still be called "All In The Family." Of the show's phenomenal longevity, O'Connor said, "There's not many places on TV where viewers can tune in and say, 'Gee, that's They know Archie as a relative or a friend they can identify with in real life." Modestly, he added that any hardworking actor who kept Archie real 1:00 (Q) INDEPENDENT NETWORK NEWS 1:05 (WTBS) MOVIE "Cry. The Beloved Country" (1951) Canada Lee.
