PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS Thursday, April 2, 1987 TELEVDSDON From Big Screen to Small: 'Nothing in Common' Page 52 pretty much the same reason he got the part in the first place: by being himself. From such a creaky old sitcom formula as this, it's hard to divine how the series will fare after this. Much of it, of course, will depend on the cast and whether sustain their energy and our interest. Todd Waring occupies the Basner wood, Elizabeth Bennett and Paul Tinder.) As Basner's divorced, but irredeemably horny dad. Bill Macy could be a revelation.

He hits the right note with the part, seems to have a nice rappport with Waring and, if the show is a hit, could pull himself out from under "Maude's" shadow. The only problem I had was with tf 4--. if 1 v. fife 1 ls Basner's divorced, but irredeemably horny dad, Bill Macy could be a revelation. By GENE SEYMOUR Daily News Staff Writer Dt's hard to watch yuppie comedy without feeling even slightly self-conscious.

Even if you're not a yuppie, you somehow find yourself thinking. They're Making Fun of Us. Of what we want to be. Of how we fall short of our best intentions. Last year's Garry Marshall movie, "Nothing in Common" ran with this notion by placing a creatively fertile, but emotionally handicapped advertising hotshot in the position of having to bolster and house his suddenly single dad.

More than one person who saw this movie and there were a lot of them probably thought this would have been even better as a situation comedy. So guess what gets underway tonight at 9:30 on Ch. And don't say you're surprised. Marshall, who sculpted his professional niche with TV shows "Happy Days," "Laverne and Shirley," "The Odd Couple," has developed "Nothing" into what appears at first glance as an unholy fusion of "Odd Couple" and "Dick Van Dyke Show" with a splash of "Sergeant Bilko." Such lineage is detectable in tonight's premiere in which David Basner. the "boy genius" adman, looks for a convincing grandpa-type to act in a cereal commercial and ends up casting his father, who almost sabotages the enterprise for 3.

Wendy Kilbourne as the stunning blonde Harvard MBA Basner hires, naturally, for her competence because I thought you would make a wonderful mother for my But as Cybill Shepherd would be the first to tell her, it takes more than imperious looks to play off hip shticks. Kilbourne looks more than uncomfortable in this crowd. She almost disappears. Her character either has to get softer or meaner now if she expects to keep up with the kind of comedy this may turn out to be. role.

Perhaps one should more properly say the Tom Hanks role since Hanks' portrayl in the original movie was such a strong performance. At times, Waring's gestures are so reminiscent of Hanks' you have to keep reminding yourself it's somebody else. Still, Waring is an appealing performer in his own right and he isn't a bad guy to spend a half-hour watching. That pretty much goes for the rest of the cast, especially Basner's unabashedly goofball staff (Mona Ly-den. BLAKE Daily News Staff Writer TVX Broadcasting Group new owners of Channel 29, were set to take charge of the station yesterday, but because of a legal technicality in the proceedings, current owner Taft Broadcasting doesn't officially hand over the reins until today.

Meanwhile, Jim Seaman, engineering vice president of TVX, said his company is not in a position to properly promote the the stations's new call letters WTXF, as opposed to the old WTAF. Consequently TVX has asked the FCC for permission to delay the changeover for 30 days. Seaman also said TVX would be taking a close look at Channel 29's Ten O'Clock News in order to familiarize itself with how a news operation works. Though TVX owns several other television stations, none has its own programs. When the corporation purchased Ch.
