She was a resident of Kosciusko for many years prior to moving to Virginia eight years ago to live with her daughter. Fran was a former member of the Junior League of Galveston, Texas, and was instrumental in the organization of the Kosciusko Junior Auxiliary. She was a member of the Little Garden Club and Saint Matthews Episcopal Church.

For ten years, Jo Gwin was a faithful member of the Saint Charles Avenue Baptist Church, where she served as a deacon. She frequently volunteered as a tutor at Caf Reconcile.A tri-athlete and marathoner, she competed in numerous triathlons and six marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 1982. In 2010 the Jo Gwin Shelby Endowed Fund for Financial Aid at Metairie Park Country Day School was established in her honor by friends, family, faculty and former students. Her legacy as a teacher and beloved member of the Country Day community will live on through this endowment and all of the many lives she touched.Jo Gwin was greatly respected by all who Iciew her for her vi tality, intellect and wit. She had an adventurous and cheerful spirit, was an avid reader, and loved going to the movies.

Later in life, she became an amateur ornithologist. Jo Gwin lived her life fully and unafraid, with gusto and passion, head and heart fully engaged in the quest for a life well lived. She will be deeply and dearly missed by all who knew her.A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, Jo Gwin is survived by her daughter Shelby Mayhew Saer, son-in-law John K. Saer, three grandchildren-Kenneth, Tobin and Julia-and her faithful service dog Lolly. Jo Gwin is also survived by her sisters Becky Smith (Pearman) of Cleveland, Mississippi, and Bobbie Lou Green (Gardiner) of Fairhope, Alabama, along with five nieces and nephews.

Her family wants to express their appreciation to her many close friends; her loving caregivers Linda Jones Bastian and Malou Gramaje, along with Janie Gage, Gail O'Brien, Jennifer Jo Gwin Shelby of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on Monday, August 29 of complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), surrounded by her family at her daughter's home in Greenwich, Connecticut. Jo Gwin, whose family were early settlers in the Mississippi Delta, was born on August 3, 1946 to the late Gwin and Nan Wilkinson Shelby of Shelby, Mississippi. Jo Gwin attended Shelby High School and graduated from Lausanne School for Girls in 1964. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University in 1969, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1969 she began her teaching career at Metairie Park Country Day School.

In 1987 she left teaching to study law, receiving her Juris Doctor with Law Review honors from Loyola Law School in 1990. After clerking fcr two years for and wife Loren of Austin, TX. She is also survived by one sibling: Willard Howell and wife Eugenia, a sister-in-law, Juanita Howell, 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by two children: Darnell Doggett Mizell and Terry Hartley as well as two siblings: Janelle Holland and Reginald Howell. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church in Round Rock, Texas.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Beck Funeral Home in Round Rock. She was born to the late George and Mollie Howell, September 18, 1926, in Lucedale, Mississippi. Doris is survived by her husband, Dr. Jon R. Lomme and six children: Gerald Mizell of Lucedale, MS, Chris Bufkin and husband, Jimmie of Cedar Park, TX, Ted Hartley and wife Stephanie of Yazoo City, MS, Deborah Germany of Madison, MS, Jon Lomme of Austin, TX and Briar Lomme.
