I REBEL CEILING PRICE ARMOUR STAR 87 bauujn REBEL CEILING PRICE 79', SKINLESS Rarely has expectation run so high for a new opera production and rarely, I suspect, has a production fulfilled that expectation so successfully as the Metropolitan Opera's new "Carmen," performed to a capacity audience (4,850) at Northrup Auditorium Tuesday night.

The production, which opened the Met's season last fall, was conceived by the late Goeran Gentele, who was killed in a car accident last summer, just 18 days after he became the Met's general manager. It was staged by the young Dutch director Bodo Igesz, who made use fo Gen-tele's annotated score as well as conversations with associates of Gentele. David Walker's costumes and Josef Svoboda's sets were a part of Gentele's total conception. The impact of the production is a result not only of the exceptional performances by James McCracken, Marilyn Home and others, but also the quality of Gentele's ideas. Ernest Guiraud's recitatives, written after Bizet's death to make the work an acceptable "grand opera," have been replaced by portions of the original Meilhac-Halevy spoken dialogue.

As a result, the work is more logical, more unified. We now know, for example, via the dialogue, that our lovesick hero, Don Jose, fled Navarra after killing a man. The opera becomes as in the Merimee novella on which the opera is based, the story, not of Carmen, but of Don Jose. The staging supports this idea; the first-act curtain rises mid-prelude (during the fate motif) to reveal Don Jose standing alone in a faint spotlight. As the opera ends, Jose again is alone, with the dead Carmen at his feet, the heads of the spectators peering from the stands.

Much of the music Bizet himself trimmed from the nal production has been added. Svoboda's spare, geometric sets emphasize that this is the realistic story of Don Jose and no longer a grand opera. The first act's thick white stucco walls (with white hot lights) are not the usual Seville town square, but the inside of the courtyard of the cigarette factory. The second act's lattice-roll decked with colored lights, the third act's parabola projection and inclined disc all are effective backgrounds for the drama. McCracken's Jose is Merimee's Jose, a man of irrational violence.

(Thus and fortunately he doesn't, as is usual, stalk Carmen at the end. She throws off the ring. Inflamed, he stabs her.) McCracken played the role Tuesday night unsubtly but with force and conviction, and he sang with uncommon richness. In another uncostumary but effective touch, McCracken is transfixed (and doomed) from the moment he sees Carmen, and his passion grows all the way through the "Habanera." There is little of Rise Stevens's elemental fury in Miss Home's Carmen, but nonetheless the characterization and singing can't be faulted. Miss Home's Carmen is foxy, impudent and full of fun.

Her tone Tuesday night was plush from top to bottom, with a pleasant lightness to the "Seguedille" and the "Gypsy Song." Adriana Maliponte's Micaela was conventional what else can one do with this role? but she sang beautifully. Andrea Velis and Russell Christopher offered amusing characterizations as the smugglers, and Christine Weidinger and Shirley Love sang expertly as Frasquita and Mercedes. John Reardon, resplendent in tight, black velvet, looked the perfect macho Escamillo, but he had trouble with the bottom notes of the role. Henry Lewis's conducting was, for the most part, sharp and precise, but at times, as in the reiterated fate motif of the first act, one wanted more power from the strings. The Schubert Boys Choir comported themselves convincingly as the street urchins, even though their number was cut.

That's show biz. Etcetera Bob Allard, who had the thankless chore of running WLOL's "Girl Talk" before it mercifully was put to rest, returns to talk-radio Monday on KANO in Anoka, 2 to 4:30 weekdays Film in the Cities, the special-education project for Twin Cities and Stillwater students, has a third annual showing at 8 p.m. next Thursday at the St. Paul Arts and Science Center complete with Hollywood searchlights, "celebrities" and a bagpipe band. One intriguing title among the films: "Frankenstein's Love Life," produced by Brad Thomas, Hazel Park Junior High An interesting irony: Last week following a CBS special Walter Cronkite interview with ex-White House counsel John Dean, WCCO-TV ran "The Scapegoat." Across the dial, WTCN-TV was running "The Defector" The "other" musical version of "Cyrano," starring Jose Ferrer and the new music of Robert Wright and George Forrest, is being mounted for a summer tour opening at the Westport (Conn.) Country Playhouse Continuing the madcap construction of movie theaters in the Twin Cities (now more than 100 screens), a group of small investors will open the Yorktown 1 and 2 June 20 In Edina.

An odd sight, the formerly unadulterated Mary Tyler Moore with a cigarette in one hand, a drink in the other, as WCCO-TV played host at a reception in the IDS Center's Crystal Room. Along with Valerie Harper (Rhoda), producer types Jim Brooks and Dave Davis, the entourage is shooting new outdoor Minneapolis scenes for next season's CBS series. Among the guests were Mayor Stenvig, Gov. Anderson and other hangers-on. Irv Letofsky.
