No less an educational institution than Harvard has sponsored a "General Hospital Weekend" in homage to the daytime serial. At Brown in Providence; R.I., pious fans come attired in hospital uniform to watch the program on the third floor of Bronson Dormitory; saloon owners near the University of Buffalo offer free drinks to students who arrive in scrub suits during their daily "General Hospital" happy hour. Locally, for those unfortunates who miss an episode, radio station WMMR (93.3 on the FM dial) broadcasts a short recap of all the network's soaps on disc- jockey- Steve Sutton's morning show. And, needless to say; "General Hospital" hysteria has spawned a network of fan clubs and booster groups.

Last June, more than 500 "G.H." zealots from 48 states journeyed to Los Angeles for the Second annual "General Hospital" fan club convention. Soaps Suds Up Kids' Psyche "The soaps provide continuity And personalities for people to care about in an age. in' which family relationships have disintegrated and young people feel increasingly self-isolated," says Dr. Mary Cassata, director of Project Daytime, a center for the study of soap operas at the University of Buffalo. Buffalo is one.

of about 25 schools around the country that offer special courses for college soap opera buffs. "When we question graduating seniors about leaving their soaps at the end of the school year," she says, "they express genuine remOrse about saying goodbye to human characters that they care for personally. It's frightening to think that these kids don't really want to go out into the real world anymore. Many of these kids don't converse with their own family members, and for them, the soap operas provide the missing dialogue from home." 1 when Luke and Laura are locked in an embrace? "Frankly, I'm not really' interested in all the stuff surrounding the show," says Paula Grimes, a self described "Luke nut." To Grimes, a senior at Temple University who for the past four years has scheduled her classes around the serial, love and romance is what keeps "General Hospital" close to her heart "I think there is something going on here that we all want to experience," she says with a sigh. "It's just all so damned romantic." EAGLES FLYERS feERi AIL SKCTtUM EVtNTS NOTtl DAMI AT MIAM1 1 1U IAOU AT MIAM1 1130 Ml SMCTtUM IVORS WtlSTMNO 1114 MOOOVMUtS 11130 rWU.

New "G.H." cast member Rick Springfield (Dr. Noah Drake) even has a top-10 hit of his own, the pop-rock "Jessie's Girl." While the show's current popularity is traceable to many factors, a sizeable number of observers contend that the key element is the infusion of ever larger doses of sex. And most observers agree that the Luke and Laura coupling a relationship that was consummated when Luke raped Laura on a deserted disco dance floor to the strains of Herb Alpert's "Rise" Was just the bcginningT'of the "G.H." craze. "You sometimes want those things that happen to Luke and Laura to happen to you," says Tammie Cheek. "So often the unbelievable happens, but you find yourself thinking that wouldn't it be nice if.

"AND THE GUYS, I see Luke as the type that a lot of guys would like to be. He's a lover with street sense." "Watching soaps is chic in an anti-intellectual Way," says Jack Frish-berg, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania. "If you didn't watch 'General Hospital' last year, you were really out of what was going on. That was all anyone on campus was talking about. This year watching 'General Hospital' surpassed Space Invaders and Rubik's Cube as the most in thing' to do on campus." Frishberg says his girlfriend broke up with him after he refused to drop an afternoon course so that they could be together to watch "General Hospital" every day- Despite strong criticisms that sex scenes such as the infamous rape is not fit for youngsters, (critics contend that it promoted a view of rape as an erotic act invited by a woman), current Nielsen figures indicate that 42 percent of the program's viewers are under age 25.

With record-breaking 'ratings, ever-increasing legions, of loyal fans and a "General Hospital" spinoff set for the fall, it would indeed seem that the' afternoon serial is, at the very least, making TV history. But for the true "G.H." aficionado, such concerns are inconsequential.
