When Watkins died in 1994, his son, Harvey Watkins Jr. became leader of the nationally known group. "It's more of a heritage thing," Woodard said. "It's really just something the children have taken an interest in going from generation to generation." The childhood friends from New Jersey, now living on opposite coasts, settled in for the three-hour drive to Grand Canyon West, the isolated, internationally known home to the new glass Skywalk. They picked it over Grand Canyon National Park because it was less than half the distance and put them back in Las Vegas before dark. The trip to the park would have meant three more hours on the road.

"I didn't want to mess with that," says Pascale, a retired educator. Their rationale is marketing gold to the American Indians behind Grand Canyon West and heresy to Canyon purists at the government-run park to the east, a fixture of family vacations and outdoor adventures for decades. In the nearly 18 months since the Skywalk opened and tripled visitor counts at 20-year-old Grand Canyon West, the rivalry and rhetoric between the "two" canyons has widened beyond the 250 miles that separate them. There is, of course, only one Grand Canyon. The geologic marvel, carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, is one of the world's natural wonders, stretching 277 miles across the plateaus of northern Arizona.

Yet nearly all visitors see the canyon from only one of three places: the South Rim, home to the postcard views and tourist-friendly facilities; the far more tranquil North Rim, characterized by tall pines and thickets of aspen; and now, the west rim on the Hualapai Reservation, far downriver from the South Rim. Some officials dismiss the idea there is competition, alternately saying there is no comparison between the two attractions or that there is a niche for each. Marketing face-off The 35-year-old Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau brought on its first full-time executive in May. His immediate charge: a marketing campaign that distinguishes a vacation at Grand Canyon National Park from Grand Canyon West. The park is the second-most-visited national park in the country after the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the North Carolina-Tennessee border.

"It's not so much that we're losing business at this end even with the opening of the Skywalk, we had a record year last year it's a matter of letting people know the difference between what we offer here and what they offer out west," says Craig Andresen, the chamber's new executive. "Here, you've literally got all the amenities for a vacation." Grand Canyon West doesn't hide the fact that it's targeting Las Vegas vacationers, particularly international visitors, who are looking for a relatively quick glimpse of the canyon on their vacation. Across the canyon, there is equal-opportunity sneering about Grand Canyon West, too. Questions about the Skywalk come up every day at South Rim visitor centers, stores and hotels.
