Monday, August 3, 1981 Philadelphia Daily News 55 DELAWARE PARK By TRACKMAN pod ddh Rmfo BlgM Rme for Fast Track. Firm Pest P-m. Graded Happy End to Silk Stockings' Tale? By JACK RISER EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Some people, it seems, are destined to live in the limelight. Headlines follow them to the heights and the depths.

Kenneth M. Mazik is such a man. Once Upon a time he was known as Dr. Ken Mazik, savior of autistic children at his Au Clair School, located on the outskirts of St. George's, Del.

He was featured at least three times on CBS' "60 Minutes" for his work and the fact that his great harness horse named Silk Stockings was keeping the school running with her winnings. It was a heartwarming story, the kind that Walt Disney Productions uses in the movies. It also was a lie. As far as can be determined, the earnings of Silk Stockings never helped one child at the school. She never served as any inspiration for any of their amazing recoveries because there were no amazing recoveries.

And no more than three of the much older students even came close to her. All this came out two years ago in sticky court actions surrounding his being divorced by Claire Mazik, the only family member with real medical training and extensive experience. An "expose" of school conditions led to the school's losing its license and being cut off from critical state funds that helped bring the yearly payments to the school by the some 25 "students" over the $15,000 per-year level. Mazik's "educational programs" were questioned and apparently failed to pass the tests because the school again was denied licensing by the state but allowed to operate on a temporary basis until Mazik could make the necessary improvements. SUITS AND countersuits were filed.

Tax investigations were launched. The man who had been voted the Good Guy Award by the Delaware Valley Harness Writers and the Humanitarian Award by the national organization was in big trouble. The mare, now retired, was awarded his ex-wife in the divorce settlement, along with most of the other top horses.

A venture into the restaurant business created headlines but little else. But now Ken Mazik is back in the spotlight, and the big headlines are just a harness race away. That race comes tonight at The Meadowlands, where the $1.7 million Woodrow Wilson Pace is being held. A son of Silk Stockings is racing. The colt has two wins and a second in his last three starts.

He is a longshot in the field filled with the likes of No Nukes, Ideal Society, Mc Kinzie Almahurst and Apollo's Way. And he is owned by one Ken Mazik. This time, however, nobody is fighting to interview him, to put him on television, to break out the sob stories about the autistic children and the horses. The publicity releases don't even mention autistic children, or give him the title of doctor. A win by his pacer tonight could make a lot of people forget about a lot of bad problems.

Mazik could be back on top, not to mention $875,000 richer for the win. THE COLT IS named Temujin. He was named Srrky's Son when Mazik bought him under very bizzare circumstances at the Kentucky sales last fall. The purchase was made under another name. Reports said Mazik couldn't come up with the $145,000 purchase price, had to scramble for it when extended credit was denied.

He contended he was half-owner of the colt in the first place, that he only bad to pay half the money. When the charges and counter charges were returned to a sane level, Mazik had the colt for his own. Only he wasn't a colt. He was a ridgling, a horse with a condition in which one of the testicles doesnt descend into the scrotum but remains lodged somewhere else in the horse's body. Some ridglings become good breeders, even with but one testicle, but it isn't a good gamble.

One big syndicator was ready to go to $400,000 for the colt until his vet's examination detected the flaw. Anyway, if Mazik knew about the flaw it didn't scare him off He kept bidding until he had Ah first son of.SilfcStookings, who had been bred to the now-deceased Race Time. Everybody in the industry was looking in the trade magazines for reports on the youngster. They knew he had been turned over to Clarence Martin, a training veteran who got his start with the Billy Haughton stable and reached his apex as trainer of the powerful Castleton Farms. He has been so quiet since then that his name even has been dropped from the "Harness Handbook" of drivers and horses, published each year for publicity purposes by the U.S.

Trotting Association. IT WASNT UNTIL Martin got the ridgling to Lexington that the world knew his name had been changed to Temujin and he wasn't exactly setting any worlds afire. He broke in his first start, then earned checks in his next three efforts. But it wasnt until he reached Vernon Downs that he exploded into the type of pacer one would expect from a marriage between Silk Stockings and Race Time, two world champions. He won a minor overnight race in 1:59 flat, drawing off by two lengths over some fair-to-decent horses.

Next out, in a $13,600 stakes race, he was the 6-5 favorite and he romped through the slop in 2:01.3, winning by nine without urging. This brought him to the Big a week ago for the Woodrow Wilson eliminations. You had to be one-two to be guaranteed a spot in the big one. Temujin finished a solid second behind Force Majeure's 1:57.2 to make the field. That division, however, looked to be the softest of the five sections so Temujin probably will be 40-1 or more in tonight's fight.

He would be shorter if his name still were Silky's Son because harness fans still remember his mom's fantastic career. Mazik has never explained why he changed it to Temujin. Almost nobody knows what Temujin even means. It was the christened name of another man destined to live in the limelight, to write headlines both good and bad. But only after he had been given the title of Genghis Khan.

KEEPING PACE; Benny Webster's No Nukes, who remains the solid favorite for tonight's race, got the biggest break of the leading contenders by drawing the No. 2 hole. Ideal Society, who handed him his first defeat in a 1:56 victory in his heat, drew No. 8 Technical Foul, who made the field as a fast third-place finisher in the race with Temujin, also has an interesting name He is owned in part by Bernie Mann, who owns the N.Y. Nets Kevin Loughery, his coach at the time, wanted Bernie to name a horse after him.

Mann obliged, in part. "Most people think Technical Foul is Loughery's middle name," he laughed For those capable of receiving USA Network shows, tonight's race can be picked up on the cable with Dave Johnson and Stan Bergstein lhecalls axulcianimexanry. 9 Kaystana Fonioas (t.
