The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials rose 32.10 to 2,286.36, adding to its 22.30-point gain Wednesday. Volume on the New York Stock Exchange came to 183.06 million shares, against 173.59 million in the previous session.

The market's recent rebound trimmed the Dow's loss for April to 18.33 points. Nevertheless, it went into the books as the market's first down month in 1987. Analysts said stocks benefited from hopes that the dollar might be stabilizing, reducing upward pressure on interest rates. Paul Volcker, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, said the Fed had lately moved to tighten its credit policy slightly with an eye on the dollar. The news was taken as no surprise in the financial world.

Prices of long-term government bonds, which move in the opposite direction from interest rates, rang up gains of as much as $20 or more for each $1,000 in face value. Brokers also noted a warm reception for some strong first-quarter earnings reports by blue chip companies. Ford Motor reported Wednesday that its 8.25 May 200O-O5 97.14 97221J 8 50 12 00 May 2005 130.7 130.15 29 8.64 10 75 Aug 2005 119.9 119171.10 841 928 Feb 2006 10721 107.291.10 8.52 743 Feb 2002-07 921 92241.5 8 36 7 88 Nov 2032-07 9426 952 27 8.38 8 36 Aug 2003-06 96.12 9820 26 8 52 8.75 Nov 2003-08 10124 102 20 8 52 9.13 May 2004-09 1052 105.101.9 8.53 1026 Nov 2004-09 116 1168 129 6 57 11.75 Feb 2005-10 12728128 4 126 863 1000 May 2005-10 112211122914 8 58 12 75 Nov 2005-M 137 15 137231J 843 1386 May 2006-11 146 5 148 13 2 645 1400 Nov 2006-11 14928 150.4 2.8 8.64 10.36 Nov 2007-12 11631 117.7 120 8 56 12 00 Aug 2008-13 132.16132201.9 8.63 1325 May 2009-14 14424145 129 8.65 12.50 Aug 2009-14k 137 137.4 17 8.70 11.75 Nov 2009- 14k 13026131 1.22 6.61 1125 Feb 2015k 1282412626123 6.52 10.63 Aug 2015k 122.9 122.171.18 6.51 986 Nov 2015k 114.5 114.1316 8 52 925 Feb 2016k 10728 108.4 1.18 8.49 7.25 May 2016k 8628 87 1.6 8 46 7.50 Nov 2016k 89.23 69271.3 8.44 Non-U-S. citizen exempt from with 10 SO Aug 1988 103 30 1042 .1 7.14 6.38 Sep 1988 9827 98.31 .1 7 16 1U8 Sep 1988 105.13 105.17 1 7.
