Gunter Peel Funeral Home of Columbus is handling arrangements. He was born August 10, 1939 in Newton, to Mr. and Mrs. Carl H. Ruth Owen Butler, Jr.

Carl was raised in the Belhaven section of Jackson and graduated from Murrah High School in 1957. He attended Florida State University on a swimming scholarship and received bachelor's and master's degrees in political science. Carl was the first out-of-state student to be elected Student Body President at Florida State. After graduating from Florida State University, Carl served three years as an Air Force officer in New Mexico. Returning to graduate school, Carl attended Vanderbilt University to work on his Ph.

D. in political science. Throughout his high school, college, military, a and teaching careers, Carl coached agegroup swimming teams for 31 years, leading his swimmers to 22 championships in his 23 years as coach in Columbus. Carl Butler taught political science at Mississippi State University from 1969- 1973 before taking a leave of absence to run as the Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, second congressional district in 1972.

He then taught history at Lee High School in Columbus for 13 years. At its inception, Carl joined the faculty at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, where he taught for 15 years. He is a member of the Mississippi Hall of Master Teachers. Carl and his wife, the former Dixie Hotlis, bought their historic home, Temple Heights, in 1967, and have spent 36 years restoring and furnishing the home to the mid nineteenth century period. Tempie Heights is designated a Mississippi Historic Landmark, is on the Historic American Building Survey, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tempie Heights has been featured in ous publications and has been the annual Columbus Spring Pilgrimage for 34 years. The Butlers maintain a significant coleotion of Parian porcelain, which has been exhibited at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Carl was the founder of Historic Columbus, the Columbus Antiques Show, and the Columbus Decorative Arts and Preservation Forum. He served as the Columbus 1976 Bicentennial Chairman. He also served on the Mississippi War Battlefield Commission, on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Historical Society, on the Advisory Board of the Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration, and on the Columbus Preservation Commission.

While a teacher at Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, Carl created the "Tales from the project which offers student candlelight tours through Friendship Cemetery. The award- winning program, which is an annual attraction during the Columbus Pilgrim age, has inspired similar programs across the Southeast. Carl received awards of merit from the Mississippi Heritage Trust and! the Missis sippi Society for his preserva Son efforts in Columbus.
