She is survived by her loving family; four daughters, and her sons-in-law, Angel and Roland Flanagan, Carol Holliday, Joanna Leary, and Cecilie and Sam Prest, all of Pearl; one brother, Robert Avent of New Orleans, and nine grandchildren. W. H. Howard was born to the late Monroe Howard and the late Beatrice Rhodes Howard on January 1, 1932 in Isola, Mississippi. He was the third of six children; two brothers and three sis- Howard ters. Howard On June 2, 1957, he was united in holy matrimony to Georgia Lee Mason of Raymond.

The couple resided in Jackson (and later Madison) and to the union three children were born; two sons and one daughter. This year W. H. and Georgia celebrated 45 years of marriage. W.

H. was employed for a number of years at W. A. Burkette Co. and Midstate Co.

where he engaged in construction work. In 1977, he, along with Ira J. Head, established the Palm Garden Restaurant and Lounge, a neighborhood tavern where friends and professional associates gathered to partake in glad tidings and discuss everything from sports to the latest political spins. As an owner of the bar, W. H.

became a counselor and friend to hundreds of patrons. He owned and operated the tavern until 2001. In 1995, W. H. accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior, was baptized, and joined in Christian membership with Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Notwithstanding his long work hours, W. H. spent a great deal of time instilling in his family an appreciation for hard work and a lifelong desire to pursue excellence. He insisted on his children attaining a high level of personal and academic achievement. His words of wisdom always guided those with whom he came in contact.

He often said, "right doesn't wrong anyone." W. H. will be remembered as a father and husband who was a provider. Mr. Howard is preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Howard; and two sisters, Mable Washington and Virdie Lee Howard.

Hairston, 84, died Wednesday, December 18, 2002, at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Visitation is 10 a.m. today at Wright Ferguson Funeral Home. Services are 11 a.m. today in the chapel of the funeral home in Ridgeland, with burial in Parkway Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Hairston was a native of Perry County, and graduated from New Augusta High School. He attended the University of Mississippi and graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1942. Upon graduation, he entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant and was attached to the 85th infantry Division. He served overseas during World War Il, in North Africa and Italy.

He was transferred to the Judge Advocate al Department, and served in General Mark Clark's Fifth Army headquarters in Rome. He was discharged from the Army as a Captain, and was awarded the Bronze Star with Oakleaf Cluster. After his discharge from the Army, he practiced law with Henry Mounger in Columbia, MS. He joined Gulf Oil Company in 1947, and worked in Shreveport, Jackson, Midland, Texas, Tulsa, and Houston, Texas. He headed the Gulf Law offices in Midland and Tulsa before being transferred to Houston, where he retired in 1983 as Assistant General Counsel of Gulf Oil Corporation.

After his retirement he returned to Jackson. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, the Mississippi State Bar, the Texas State Bar, the Oklahoma State Bar, and a former member of the Jackson Petroleum Club, the Midland Petroleum Club, and the Tulsa Petroleum Club. Mr. Hairston is survived by his daughters, Beverly Hairston of Edmond, and Meredith Hairston O'Leary of Jackson; grandchildren, Laura Geczy, lan O'Leary, Hannah O'Leary, and Erica O'Leary, and cousin, David Morris. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Palmer Home for Children in Columbus, or French Camp Academy.

Survivors include: wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Nabors of Jackson; daughter, Linda Spann and husband Will of Brandon; and one granddaughter, Lindsay.

Mrs. Ruff was a native of Humphreys County, and a daughter of Ferdeller and Arizona (Woods) Forbes. She was a former longtime resident of Jackson. While living in Jackson, she worked at General Electric Lampworks Plant and retired from there in August 1980 after 36 years.

She moved from Jackson to Pensacola, FL. in 1982, where she lived for 20 years developing, owning, and managing a mobile home park. Survivors include: her two sons, Willie E. and Joyce Ruff of Tucson, AZ. and Marion and Ruth Ruff of Enon, OH; a sister, Grace Myers of Pensacola, FL; ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a daughter, Mary Ruff Valley; a brother and three sisters.
