Three notrump would have been a cinch for North-South, but South wanted those 150 points for spade honors. South's two-club opening bid was strong, artificial and forcing, he and his partner were playing weak two bids, which means that a strong two bid in any suit had to be made in clubs. The remainder of the auction was natural.

West's well-timed opening lead took out declarer's most important entry to dunny. Any other lead would have given South the trick he needed to make game. But admiration for West's excellent opening lead must be tempered and weighed against his bidding error, an error that ultimately proved conclusive. South was certain from the bidding that both the ace of hearts and king of diamonds were in West's hand, and that West had length in both suits. South realized that to make the contract he bad to strip the West hand of clubs and throw West on play where he would have to surrender the game-fulfilling trick.

Accordingly, South ruffed a club in his hand at trick two and played the ace of spades and a low spade to dummy's nine. He ruffed another club, exhausting West's club suit and drew East's remaining trumps. Next South led the ace-queen of diamonds. West winning the queen with the king. If west returned a diamond, dummy's jack was the 10th trick.

If he returned a heart, declarer's king would score. 1978 Angeke? Times Syndtcatt THE BORN LOSER by Art Sansom DONALD DUCK by Watt Disney I II I i UNCL OONAU!
