I HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Mary Tyler Moore and her producer-husband, Grant Tinker, have separated and are living apart after 17 years of marriage. "The separation is best for both of us," Moore said while in seclusion yesterday.

"We have very positive feelings about one another and are sure we are doing the right thing. We will remain close but not married." "We are packing it in," Tinker said. He refused to say whether they would file for divorce, but said they would continue as partners in their successful MTM Inc. production company. The separation is the second Jor Moore, 42, and Tinker, 53.

They have no children. They broke up temporarily in December 1973, but reconciled several months later. "MY SEPARATION from Grant was the best thing that happened to us," she said then. "When two people spend as much time together as we do, they tend to take one another for granted. We are moving into a new house in two weeks, and it feels as if we're starting a whole new life." Tinker indicated yesterday there would be no attempt at another reconciliation.

"There was a long period of trying not to let the separation happen, but it was unsuccessful," he explained. Moore first achieved stardom as the understanding wife on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" in the 1960s. She gained even more fame and popularity in the 70s as an unmarried working woman in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," in which she portrayed a TV news producer.
