Thursday, December 1, 1977 Philadelphia Daily News 'He Tried to Kill Jury Told By KIT KONOLIGE from the ramilys home in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia in December 1971. In his opening statement to the eight- man, four-woman Delaware County jury, Assistant District Attorney James Del Bello said the prosecution would prove that Nauss, 25, of Aston Township, killed Miss Lande by banging her in a Folcroft loft, then buried her body in a wooded area of Winslow Township, N.J. The body has never been found. NAUSS WAS NEATLY attired in a "He tried to kill me! He tried to kill me!" Elizabeth Ann Lande ran into the living room screaming those words after a bullet she believed was fired by her accused killer, Robert T. Nauss slammed into her bedroom in August 1971, Miss Iande's father testified at the opening day of Nauss' murder trial yesterday.

Frank Lande also said Nauss was the only one of the 21-year-old Miss Lande's former acquaintances who never called after she disappeared SHOE $20 OiJOUR PILE-LINED ST0RFI a THERE ARE BRASS BEDS few ym i GOAT! He also is serving a three-year federal prison term on drug- dealing charges, and has been convicted of the October 1976 rape and beating of a Media woman. Nauss' attorney, Edward Savastio, told the jury he found it hard to believe his 140- pound client could hang the 110-pound Miss Lande from rafters 93 inches off the floor. Three other fates could have befallen the missing woman, Savastio said an accidental death, homicide by someone else or suicide. THE EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS of the beautiful Miss Lande, formerly a Philadelphia Community College student, promised to play a prominent part in the trial.

Savastio said she was "the most bizarre of all" the people involved in the case. Del Bello conceded that Miss Lande was committed to the Philadelphia Psychiatric Center in August 1970, after telling her parents she had swallowed a large amount of aspirin. She also was treated at Lankenau Hospital a month before she disappeared for a suspected overdose of the sleeping pill Seca-nol. But the prosecutor said Miss Lande had not actually taken overdoses either time. "There is no evidence in this case that Elizabeth Lande attempted suicide," he said "The doctor who treated her at the psychiatric center will testify that she was not suicidal." The prosecution's chief witness, Del Bello said, will be William Stan-den, 26, a friend of Nauss' who testified at the preliminary hearing that he helped the alleged killer cut down Miss Lande's nude body.
