A 48-yard field goal by Borys Shlapak in the second period was the first MSU counter. Eric (The Flea) Allen carried in from the six in the fourth quarter after Ron Curl recovered an Illinois fumble on the Illini 25 to start the drive. It was the first shutout for a team coached by Bob Blackman, the new Illini coach, formerly of Dartmouth, since Dartmouth was blanked by Princeton 7-0 in 1960. Illinois never really threatened in the game. The Illini never got into Michigan State territory on their own power, although they did a lot of intercepting and fumble-grabbing.

When starting Spartan quarterback Mike Ras-mussen couldn't get the team rolling, back-up quarterback George Mi-haiu was sent in for the Spartans in the second period. Mihaiu was supposed to be a runner rather than a passer but he was hitting his receivers and taking the team down field. But a penalty set State back and a second field goal by Shlapak, the soccer style kicker; was short. Illinois 0 0 Michigan State 0 3 0 MSU fG. Shlapak 48.

Outplayed most of the first half, fourth-ranked Michigan parlayed the old-fashioned end-around play and a freak "goal-tending" play into a 21-6 victory over Northwestern in their Big Ten football opener.

End Dave Rather scored the first two Wolverine touchdowns, one on a 18-yard, end-around dash and another on recovery in the end zone of the ball on a freak play after a 52-yard Michigan field goal try. Place kicker Dana Coin's long field goal try was falling inches shy of the crossbar when Northwestern defensive back Jack Dustin leaped up and batted the ball into the end zone and Rather fell on it for a touchdown. The play was ruled a kick from scrimmage touched by a receiving team player and eligible for recovery by the kicking team. That gave Michigan a 14-0 lead early in the second half and halfback Billy Taylor scored on a 5-yard run later in the third quarter to push the Wolverines ahead 21-0. Maurie Daig-neau, Northwestern's quarterback, finally put the Wildcats on the board midway in the fourth quarter with a 2-yard scoring toss to halfback Johnny Cooks capping an 80-yard march.

Rather was sprung by Michigan's soph quarterback Kevin Casey on a total of three end-around plays for almost 50 yards. The third time was an 11-yard scamper to North-western's 16 following which Taylor ran 11 yards and then scored from the 5. Until a 47-yard Michigan scoring strike just before intermission. Northwest-em completely dominated the first half. The Wildcats drove from mid-field to Michigan's 18 early in the second quarter only to have Bill Panisek miss on a field goal try from the Wolverine 26.

Also in the second quarter. Wildcat Mike Varty intercepted a Casey pass on Michigan's 32 but the Wolverines held on their 25. The first quarter produced a 42-yard Northwestern march to Michigan's 10. But the tough Michigan defense staged its first important stand, holding for downs on the 10. In fact, Michigan did not get past midfield until a 's 20-yard end-around scamper to the Wildcat 42 with about five minutes left in the second quarter.

After an exchange of punts, Michigan launched its first touchdown drive sparked by soph fullback, 237-pound Gene Shuttles-worth. He slammed 16 yards on four cracks. Then a Wildcat pass interference on Northwestern's 18 set up Rather's scoring dash for a 7-0 Michigan lead. Daigneau completed 17 of 21 passes for 199 yards but had three intercepted. An 8-yard punt gave Nebraska The ball on Oregon's 33 yard line. At this point Van Brownson succeeded a at quarterback. Fullback Ron Olds swept right end for 14 and four plays later Dixon went the final six yards for a touchdown. Later another short Oregon punt went out of bounds at midfield and Brownson worked out a touchdown in 11 plays using reserve running backs Maury Damkroger and Jeff Hughes along with Dixon. Tagge and Brownson completed 10 of 13 passes and that fine veteran secondary i three thrown by Oregon's fouts.

Nebraska ran 86 plays, running and passing, to 54 by Oregon. Nebraska's running backs, Kinney and Dixon kept fresh strength on the field. Kinney carries the early load but Dixon gives him the rest he needs and performs just as well. The Cornhuskers built a secure 14-0 lead in the first half. They established clear physical superiority which became more apparent with each passing moment.

They received the opening kickoff and moved to Oregon's seven yard line. There, however, Olds fumbled and the ball was taken in the air by Oregon's Fred Manuel. He was in the end zone and it became a touchback. Oregon, starting from its 20 yard line, moved across midfield on the hard running of Bobby Moore but Nebraska's superb pass defense stopped the march with an interception by Dave Mason on Nebraska's 33 yard line. Again the Huskers started an irresistible drive punctuated by a 35 yard pass, Tagge to Jerry List.

In nine more plays, including a 13-yard keeper by Tagge, the Huskers had their first point. Kinney dove over from the one yard line. Early in the second period an Oregon punt took a Nebraska roll while several Oregon players watched it roll. It was finally downed on Oregon's 47 yard line. Fresh backs carried the Huskers to their second touchdown.

Dixon and Damkroger made steady gains. Tagge sneaked for an important first down on the 11 yard line and Dixon completed the drive with a two yard dive into the end zone. Oregon's coach, Jerry Frei, was impressed with Nebraska's defense. He said, "I hoped we'd show more offensive poise, but they defensed us very well. I know we're a better offensive team.
