E6 BEl All 62 Monday, April 14, 1980 Philadelphia Daily News GOOD, YEAR Johnny Rutherford. near record Ru Rutherford Rolls to Ontario Win ONTARIO, Calif. (UPI) Pole-sitter Johnny Rutherford led almost the entire race and captured the Twin 200 yesterday at Ontario Motor Speedway by more than a full lap over runnerup Tom Sneva in the first Indy-car event of the year. Rutherford, 41, winner of the 1974 and 1976 Indianapolis 500, covered the 80 laps around the 2.5-mile Ontario course in 1:14.03 for an average speed of 162.053 MPH, barely missing the race record set in 1978 by Danny Ongais, of 162.810 MPH. Gordon Johncock finished third followed by Spike Gehlhausen, Tom Bagley of Centre Hall, and Gordon Smiley as only 11 of the 25 starters finished under a yellow caution flag.

RUTHERFORD, DRIVING a Pennzoil Chaparral for the first time since leaving the McLaren team last year, broke quickly at the start of the race and opened a four-second lead over Bobby Unser as the two pulled away from the rest of the field. Unser grabbed a brief lead on the eighth lap as both drivers maneuvered around slower cars but Unser was forced out of the race after 14 laps when his car sustained a radiator puncture. Rutherford moved back into the lead and opened a 29-second advantage over 1979 Indy 500 winner Rick Mears. Mears then lost second place to Al Unser, who subsequently lost second place to Pancho Carter. Pearson on Reigns in Rebel DARLINGTON, S.C.

(UPI) David Pearson took the lead on the 158th lap and widened it to 3.3 seconds to Wire the rain-shortened Rebel 500 yesterday at Darlington Raceway with an average speed of 112.399 MPH. Pearson, driving a Chevrolet, picked up a purse of $21,430 in his 11th win at Darlington -his seventh in the Rebel 500. Pearson also won the TranSouth 200 late-model sportsmans' race Saturday at Darlington. NASCAR officials called the race as dusk approached after rain forced a delay of two hours and 18 minutes at the 107-lap mark of the 367-lap race. PEARSON LED THE last 32 laps by fending off Benny Parsons, who finished second.

Harry Gant and Daryll Waltrip finshed one lap down for third and fourth, while Dick Brooks finished fifth two laps down. All top five finishers were driving Chrolets. This was Pearson's first ride for the Hoss Ellington team since Donnie Allison left the scene last month. "I felt like if the engine held up and didn't have any problems, I could win the race," Pearson said later. There were 12 lead changes among seven drivers, including Pearson, Parsons, Waltrip, Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, Lennie Pond and Dave Marcis.

who has won more races on this track than any other driver, led for 99 laps, followed by Yarborough, who led for 35. A KEY TO Pearson's winning strategy was that he did not change tires in the first pit stop after the rain delay. Yarborough changed four tires and Parsons two. Three top drivers were knocked out of contention on the first lap of the race when Ricky Rudd and Richard Petty tangled in the first turn. Buddy Baker and Neil Bonnett were eliminated in the five-car wreck, and Petty went two laps down after stopping for repairs.

James Hylton also was involved in the wreck. Bobby Allison was forced from the race with a blown engine with more than three-quarters of the race to go. Earnhardt, looking for third straight win this year after taking Southeastern 500 at Bristol, and Atianta, led twice for 15 laps before being forced from the race with a blown engine in lap 107. The race was marred by seven caution flags totaling 47 laps, four of which were for rain. His last Grand National victory was the Southern 500 at Darlington last fall while substituting for an injured Earnhardt for the Osturland team. Asked if he got a special satisfaction with back-to-back victories, the 45-year-old Spartanburg, S.C., native said, "You get a satisfaction of winning anytime you win.

It makes me feel good to be in my first race and win with Pearson said he didn't change tires when the other two leaders did because he had changed all four on the prior pit stop. ON THE 49TH LAP, Rutherford passed Sneva and put more than a full lap between himself and the evental runnerup. On the 53rd lap Sneva passed Rutherford to put himself on the same lap as the winner but Rutherford came back one lap later to regain the full lap advantage and eased to the checkered flag. There were no serious crashes in the race with three caution periods totalling 14 laps. Rutherford, who set records throughout the race but missed Ongais' record due to the final caution flag, qualified Saturday at 196.803 mph followed by Bobby Unser and brother Al Unser.

Sneva was the fifth fastest qualifier at 192.967 mph.
