Unser grabbed a brief lead on the eighth lap as both drivers maneuvered around slower cars but Unser was forced out of the race after 14 laps when his car sustained a radiator puncture. Rutherford moved back into the lead and opened a 29-second advantage over 1979 Indy 500 winner Rick Mears. Mears then lost second place to Al Unser, who subsequently lost second place to Pancho Carter. Sneva of Spokane, moved into second place following a caution flag on the 41st lap.

But Rutherford quickly opened a 15-Iength lead with Johncock third followed by Al Unser, Bagley and Gehlhausen and pulled away to the easy triumph. ON THE 49TH LAP. Rutherford passed Sneva and put more than a full lap between himself and the evental runnerup. On the 53rd lap Sneva passed Rutherford to put himself on the same lap as the winner but Rutherford came back one lap later to regain the full lap advantage and eased to the checkered flag. There were no serious crashes in the race with three caution periods totalling 14 laps.

Rutherford, who set records throughout the race but missed Ongais record due to the final caution flag, qualified Saturday at 196.803 mph followed by Bobby Unser and brother Al Unser. Sneva was the fifth fastest qualifier at 192.967 mph. In a preliminary event, Roy Smith of Victoria, B. captured the Western Series Grand National NASCAR stock car race by nearly 12 seconds over pole-sitter Bill Schmitt of Redding, Calif. Smith took the lead on the 39th lap of the 50-lap race and gradually drew away to the victory as he moved to the top of the West Series point standings, Jle averaged 135.583 mph.

Pearson, driving a Chevrolet, picked up a purse of $21,430 in his 11th win at Darlington his seventh in the Rebel 500. Pearson also won the TranSouth 200 late-model sportsmans race Saturday at Darlington. NASCAR officials called the race as dusk approached after rain forced a delay of two hours and 18 minutes at the 107-lap mark of the 367-lap race. PEARSON LED THE last 32 laps by fending off Benny Parsons, who finished second.
