Thursday. December 10,1981 Philadelphia Daily Ws 65 ndleir ByTEDSILARY Ken Hamilton always wanted to experience the feeling that two fellow coaches he has greatly admired. West's Joe Goldenberg and Overbrook's Mark Levin, -experienced seven times between them in seven seasons. in last year's Public League final, Ben Franklin topped Frankford to give the school its long-awaited title and "Ham" his long-awaited ultimate high. But this is 1981-82 and Franklin, though a definite contender, is not the early-season favorite, Yo, Kenny, what's that feel like? "I wouldn't mind being in this position every year," said Hamilton.

"If I'm in this position every year, it means I'm coming off a title. That means lots of titles." Reggie Faison probably, the league's No. 1 point guard, and wing man Keith Smith are returning starters. Percy Warfield, a 6-6 football was used sparingly last season yet has already shown an inclination to succeed in a physical game. Leon Washington and junior Edward Robinson complete the starting lineup.

"I saw Robinson in the Future League," Hamilton said. "1 liked the way he played and I was thinking, 'It's a shame this kid doesn't go to Some kid comes over and says, 'That guy's gonna help you next As it turned out, Ed was already at Franklin and he'd gotten cut from JV as a sophomore." At this point, it appears that the Electrons will not be as strong beyond the starters as they've been the past few seasons, although another Division championship is surely not out of the question. MY TOP SUBS are juniors and they're basically the same," Hamilton said. "I expect one or more to step forward. "If our seniors keep things under control and our youngsters grow up quick, maybe we'll be in the thick of things.

But we have a lot of At Jules Mastbaum Tech, forward Darren Keith (18.1) finished fourth last season in Public League scoring, while guards Timmy Brown (1S.9) and now-junior Dana Garner (12.4) were 14th and 38th, respectively. Ellison Huggins didn't start, but often played more minutes than fifth starter Andy McGraw. Also, Charlie Davis filled an important role off the bench. That fellow over there in the corner, smiling from ear to ear, is Ralph "Bones" Schneider, Mastbaum's coach. "You want me to talk about how we're gonna win it? You talk about that.

I'm not ready to," said Schneider, now the dean of league coaches (24th season). "We do have good players back, but we're still not tall and, like always, we're not deep. Our big problem will be getting the ball once someone shoots and misses." If experience means anything. University City wilt also improve by leaps and 'bounds and field goals. Six players qualify as veterans and Ben Bland, a talented 6-5 junior, advances from theJV.

"STEVE BRIGGS has probably come on the most," Steve Kane said. "He's only 6-3, but I'd swear he's got a seven-foot wing span. In one game, he had IS rebounds and eight blocks. Mike Kirkland, our 6-5 football player, is also playing well. "Last year, we used to score 70 points and give up 80.

So far, nobody's scored more than 50 on us." Juniors Calvin Gambrell, a 6-1 guard who will have to handle and score, and 64 Anthony Robinson, a nimble forward despite excess bulk, are Thomas Edison's top players. The others still must prove their worth. "We have the potential to be a contender," Coach Howard Ratinoff said. "I can see us just making or just missing the playoffs. For sustained periods in different games, we've played extremely well.

Then we play sloppy. Anthony has ranged from awesome to ordinary. That's the way it'll be until he gains confidence." Rich Yankowitz has that sparkling look in his eyes again, even though Murrell Dobbins Tech, led by guards Allen Jones, Terrence Trot-tie and Robert Warren, probably won't make the playoffs. "We had some definite weaknesses the past few years," Yankowitz said. "There were certain things we couldnt do.

Whenever we wanted to use a press or had to face a press, I shuddered. All these kids have good basketball smarts and they all can handle the ball." TWO YEARS back, with four underclass starters, William Penn went 8-7. Last year's record was 4-12. This year's team, again with four underclass starters, should fall somewhere in between. Junior guards Jerome Brisbon and Eric Reynolds will take plenty of shots and sink a decent percentage.

Anthony King can get hot from medium range with the best of 'em. Franklin Learning Center is in for a definite, uh, learning experience. The school has only 150 eligible boys and the gym is in such bad shape, all games will be played on the road. "We dont have much in the way of shooters, ballhandlers or leapers," said Dr. Robert Farley, who once assisted Jack Kraft at Malvern Prep.
