Mabus, retired teacher, coach By Shayda Rankin Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer Mabus Lucille Curtis Mabus, 91, a retired teacher and coach, died of heart failure Thursday at St. Memorial Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Nowell Funeral Home in Ackerman with burial in Enon Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Wright Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Nowell Funeral Home in Ackerman. Mrs.

Mabus was born in 1909 near Mabus French Camp. She played basketball at Delta State, was a teacher and coach and worked in Washington, D.C., during World War II. In 1947, she moved to Ackerman where she was active in the Methodist Church and the Twentieth Century Club. "She was the best mother a son could ever have. She put a lot of energy into me.

She used to be room mother every year when was in school," said her son, former Gov. Ray Mabus. He remembered his mother as one who would tell it like it was. "She was a frank person who told you whatever was on her mind. When people would ask me how was my doing, I'd tell them that her mind is working wonderfully, because her mind was connected to her tongue.

That would let you know that she was doing fine." "Although mother really didn't want me pursuing politics for fear that I'd be disappointed, she didn't discourage me. She was always there at every campaign, rally or whatever. I remember the time we were at the Neshoba County Fair, a gentleman was holding a poster that had a negative connotation about me on it. She asked him if she could see it, and she ripped the poster apart," Mabus said. "As Abraham Lincoln said, "I would be nothing without my dear mother' is felt about my mother.

Pryor Funeral Home of Calhoun City, is handling arrangements. Mrs. Bates was a native of Bellefontaine, Miss. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Apopka. He moved to the Delta in 1950. He was a officer for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Daisye Bissell retired secretary ITTA BENA Daisye Bissell, 88, a retired secretary, died of heart failure Wednesday at home.

Services are 2 p.m. today at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood with burial in Itta Bena Cemetery. Ms. Bissell was born in Itta Bena and lived there all of her life. She was a secretary at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service when it was known as the Government Classing Office.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include: several nieces and nephews. Perla T. Bradley administrative director GULFPORT Perla Thompson Bradley, 57, an administrative director, died of cancer Tuesday at home Services were Thursday at St. James Catholic Church with burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home handled arrangements. Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and taught English literature at Long Beach High for several years before her 25-year career as administrative director of Center Stage Theater in Biloxi. She was involved in many community organizations. Survivors include: husband, Fred; daughters, Nicole Bradley of Gulfport and Stacey Sargent of Charleston, S.C.; and one grandchild.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. today in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home in Batesville is handling arrangements. Mr. Byrd was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Campbell was a native of Hinds County and had lived in Terry, Jackson and Clinton. He received his education at Raymond High School, Hinds Junior College and Mississippi State University. He was an honor graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He was a veteran of World War land the Korean War.

He received the APTO Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart Medal with one OLC, the Bronze Star Medal with one OLC and the Meritorious Unit Badge. Mr. Campbell was a federal employee of the Mississippi Army National Guard. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel as executive officer of the 134th Combat Support Hospital, Mississippi Army National Guard in Jackson. While with the Guard, he received the Mississippi Magnolia Cross, the Mississippi Magnolia Medal and served as aide-de-camp to Governor John Bell Williams.

He also received the Meritorious Service Medal from the Army for exceptional service from August 1946 to September 1979. He played baseball in the YMCA League in Jackson for several years, receiving the Jackson YMCA Sportsmanship Award in 1960. While living in Clinton, he was very active in the Clinton Youth Council and served as PTA president. He was a member of the Gulf Hills Men's Golf Association and the Tuesday Morning Coffee Club. "A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, his family always came first.

With a gleam in his eyes, he encouraged them in all their endeavors. Friends will always remember his wit, humor, and wavering support," said, family friend, Hal Clark of Gulfport, said, His wife, Clyda Johnson Campbell of Ocean Springs, also remembered her husband as a family man. "I met my husband when I was in the ninth grade, and he was a freshman in college. We had been married for 53 years, and we shared a lifetime of happiness together. He was a great family man and loved being involved and supportive of whatever the kids were in.

A brick will be placed upon the Walk of Honor at Hinds Community College in Raymond in memory of such a great man," she said. Other survivors include: son, Joe C. Campbell Jr. of Gulfport; daughter, Betsy Campbell Randazzo of Raymond; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hinds Community College Development Foundation.

John C. Cline former travel agency owner FLORENCE John C. Cline, 60, a former travel agency owner, died of heart failure Wednesday at home.

He had lived in Florence for 31 years. He was the former owner of Cline Tours of Jackson. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Wahabi Shrine where he was past colonel of Heavyweight Motor Corps. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include: daughter, Cindy Owen of Nashville; sons, Tim Cline and John Cline, both of Florence; sisters, Evelyn Greenwood and Jo Patrick, both of Jackson; brother, Gary Cline of Mendenhali; and one grandchild.

Clinton Cross retired guard, electrician GREENVILLE Clinton Cross, 75, a retired security guard and electrician, died of heart failure Wednesday at King's Daughter's Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Boone-Wells Funeral Home with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Cross was a native of Humphreys County. He was an Army veteran of World War II. After he was discharged, he returned to the Delta and was a farmer in Bolivar and Sunflower County. He became a security guard at Greenville Mills in 1955 and retired in 1985.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was the widower of Mary Lerlene Hall. Survivors include: daughters, Linda Jackson of Greenville, Robbie Fulgham of West Point and Sandra Edwards of Glen Allen; son, Billy Gene Cross of Glen Allen; sisters, Eva Munn of Sidon and Ann Johnson of Greenville; brother, Willie "Billy" Pink Cross of Clarksdale; and eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was former constable for the Southern District of Covington County for two terms. He also served as chief of police for Seminary 1976- 1978. He was an honorary deputy with the Covington County Sheriff's Office. He was past president of the United Steel Workers of America Union-Purvis Chapter.

He was a member and deacon at Williamsburg Baptist Church. Survivors include; wife Martha; sons, Charles Glover Jr. and John H. Glover, both of Collins, and Frank A. Glover of Cummings, daughter, Mary G.

He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a B-52 torrent gunner. He was awarded numerous medals including three Bronze Stars. He formed his own construction company, Holloman Gray, Inc. in 1963. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Grenada and also served on the building committee.

Survivors include: sisters, Margaret Murphy of Lexington and Elizabeth Hull of Bay Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
