Wayne (Red) Williams, WLOL general manager, said he was not in a position to discuss any changes, "until the time is right," a phrase often meaning that he doesn't want to tip his hand to the competition. The format change suppqsedly will take place next week. In some other major cities where "listener revolts" were launched when the lone classical station wanted to drop the format, the Federal Communications Commission stepped in and prevented the change on the basis that other stations were serving listener needs in other musical formats and it wouldn't be in the pub- lie interest to eliminate classical music. Wendell Brustman, president of International Design Center, which has been a sponsor on the station on and off for seven years, was considering doubling his radio advertising budget there until he heard about the change.

In writing Williams to cancel the ad he said he couldn't "comprehend the logic" of the decision and hoped that some other station would pick up on the format. Brustman said that he has bought WLOL-FM time to serve "the selective audience" for his specialized furniture business and that- response in the last several months has been extremely good. Kjell Bergh, general manager of Borton Volvo, said he first learned about WLOL-FM's plans from a sales representative at a recent Minnesota Twins party sponsored by WCCO Radio and Pennzoil. It came as "a shocker," he said. The firm was spending about $6,000 this year on the station.

Bergh said the effort has been particularly 1 with the "well-educated, academic and professional people" and with Scandinavians who buy "We have always spent a lot of money on the AM side, too, and I feel we should have been entitled to be informed," Bergh 6aid, "We're canceling all our future advertising with anything that spells WLOL."
