6. DINING OUT AND IN: Alex Schoenbaum, All-America guard at Ohio State a quarter-century ago, was in to look over the 50th unit in his chain of Shoney's Big Boy restaurant drive-ins at Cottman Ave. and Roosevelt Blvd. Shoney's first move in linking forces with local operator Jack Engel was a remodeling and expansion of the dininjr room facilities. The Northeast eatery cut its number of auto stalls (80) in half and tripled the size of the dining room to 135 seats.

"The drive-ins started on the West Coast," Schoenbaum said, "and now the trend there is for the autoist to get out of the car and go inside. Customers seem more interested in service, atmosphere and environment now." In 1950, the Big Boy chain had eight units doing $3 million a year. That year Schoenbaum took a franchise for 10 Eastern and Southern states. The chain now numbers 375 restaurants coast-to-coast with a $100 million business volume. Hamburger and sandwiches constitute 40 percent of the sales in this area, Schoenbaum said.

"But in the South folks go more for steaks, chicken and fried shrimp even at lunch," said the Virginia-born, 235-pound ex-gridder.
