Men Who Make Good Take an inventory of your friends, Mr. Renter, and make a careful investigation as to the ones who have made good. For sake of argument say there are ten of them and two of them have made good in the highest sense of the word; perhaps three of them have done very well; maybe that three more of them are making both ends meet but getting ahead very slowly; the other two are flat failures. By Rail and Trail to El Paso. "By gum, fellows, she's moaned one of a party of live Deming gentlemen who started to El Pano Tuesday evening in a motor to hear the election returns. This was only the beginning of their hard luck, however, for a few minutes later they were pointedly res quested by the con duet of a frieght train, which they had had the nerve to flag, to betake themselves to the mesquite, Dropped on the sandy waste not far from Lars nark the quintet set out over the ties for the little station house which was some distance on the road to El Paso. Before the blazing fire of the station house base burner the party thawed out their numb and weary limbs and listened to the election returns waylaid by the local operator. The arrival of No.

10 offerred the first means of escape and the marooned motorists finished their journey in a Pullman. The machine was towed into El Paso the next day by a local garage car and is now undergoing repairs. The driver had allowed the water to run out. In the party were H. H.

Kelly, Mayor John Corbett, J. A. Mahoney, H. G. Bush and Clarence Leonard.

It is reported that Mr. Mahoney can hop two ties with great facility, in fact perform equal to any tie artist that has visited this section In many moons. H. H. Kelly can ride wooden horse to perfection, so it is reported.

North Side. Galvanized culverts are being put in on the Borderland highway. The Tyler homestead was fenced in during the past week. T'he pumping plant on the HIlis ranch works like a charm. H.

E. VanSickle was over this week to inspect the pumping plant on the Hillis ranch. Mr. Louver has returned home from Lordsburg. after a several months absence and intends to do wholesale improving on his ranch.

Among the several improvements on Mr. Brydon's ranch, we note 21 new modern poultry house. Miss Miles will be the "lady with the hoe" from now on. A garden spot has just been plowed on her homestead. W.

H. McDonough has his well drilled down to almost forty, feet. More land is being cleared on Betts' homestead. The young people of the Northside and Luxor are planning for a grand harvest ball in the near future. The Western Transfer have haying and closed down their camp this week.

Labor Lost. In the manuscript files turned over to the new management of the GRAPHIC are a surprising number of literary efforts that might better have been expended in a better cause. Most of them would lead a visitor to believe that Deming was about the worst place and its citizens are the most unfortunate creatures on top of earth. The reason most of them were not used is apparent. The following is in the form of an open letter addressed to the yard freight engine of one of our most efficient railroads.

and is a fair sample of the whole: "To the Railroad: "Gentlemen: Is it absolutely neeessary, in the discharge of his duty day and night, that the engineer of your yard engine should make it ding and dong and fizz and spit, and clang and bang and buzz and hiss and bellow and wail and pant and rant and yowl and howl and grate and grind and puff and bump and clink and clank and chug and moan and hoot and toot and crash and grunt and gasp and groan and whistle and wheeze and squawk and blow and jar and jerk and rasp and jingle and twang and clank and rumble and jangle and ring and clatter and yelp and croak and howl and hum and snarl and puff and howl and thump and boom and clash and jolt and jostle and shake and screech and snort and snarl and slam and scrape and throb and crink and jangle and quiver and rumble and roar and rattle and yell and smoke and smell and shriek like "Unfortunate who tries to live and sleep in this vicinity Christian Church Convention. The second annual convention of the Christian Church of the Rio Grande Valley will be held in Deming, New Mexico, from November 12 to 14, inclusive. This is one of the big events in the church calendar and brings many visitors from over the state, A number of very able speakers will be present. J. Clancy, general manager of the Harriman lines, with offices in San Francisco, and J. D. Matthews, resident engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad at Tucson, Arizona, were in Deming for a short visit last week. Both these gentlemen are boosting for Deming and are favoring the town just as much as it is in their power.

James B. Horn, of Cliff, and Miss Annie Phillips, of Hondale, were married at high noon Wednesday at the Methodist parsonage, the Rev. H. M. Bruce officiating.
