l-Tln Cumberland News Tuesday, Octeber 23, 1973 Surplus Is Reported By Circuit Court Clerk Paul C. Haberlein, clerk Allegany County Circuit Court has reported receipts of $541, 016.22 for fiscal 1972-73 of which $213,373.71 was turned over to the. county. The office, a self-sustaining operation, also noted that re ceipts were shared with incor- porated towns in the amount of $51,631.68. This resulted from collections on licenses and other fees.

Fees, licenses and commission payments to the State of Maryland accounted for another $124,253 and salaries (clerk, regular and part-time employes) $106,777.47. Haberlein noted that sheriff fees paid to other coun- ties amounted to only $238 while Allegany County i $2,770.95. During the fiscal year ending June 30, the clerk's office com pleted the second phase of continuous re-binding a repairing of mortgage, land marriage and other record books which are kept on file. All elementary schools in the county will be open for visitation the all' this week. The high schools have open house according to the following schedule: fresh- today; Wednesday; juniors, Thursday, and seniors, Friday. Also as part of the observance, an education week display has been set "up in the window of the Blue Cross-Bliie Shield office on the corning of Baltimore and Liberty streets. The theme of American Edu- cation Week this year is "Get Richard Mappin, of Allegany County Teachers Association, has stated, "We (the teachers) want you (the community) to "get involved" with us in providing the best education possible for the stu- dents of Allegany County." Mr.

Mappin also feels that American Education Week is a good time for all Americans to reassess the nation's priorities. He comments, "In 1970-71, for example, estimated federal ex- penditures for education were 54.4 billion, just over one- twentieth of the $82 billion we spent for defese. Total educa- tional expenditures federal, state, and local were only half of those for defense. I feel that it is about time change in our national spending priorities."
