By JOE BALTAKE The rousing, screeching car chase which comes towards the end of "The French Connection" is almost too good to be true. Up to this point, it seems almost impossible for this extraordinary crime film to top itself. But top itself it does! What we have here is a fantastically super movie about the international narcotics racket and police-squad tactics in seamy, dingy New York. It's a dream come true for famished moviegoers who have a strong yen for an energetic, exciting, gutsy film. The R-rated work opened yesterday at Cinema 19.

Adapted for the screen by Ernest Tidyman (author of the novel the involved and intricate plot has to do with two plainclothes-men (Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider) who sniff out 120 pounds of pure heroin valued at $32 million. From then on, the film rapidly shifts between New York and France, the headquarters of the wealthy heroin big-wig who's heading the smuggling caper. This is all a prelude to what is easily the most exciting chase sequence put on film. Hackman races through the busy, congested streets of New York (New. York, no trying to keep up with a speeding elevated railway car.

The action alternates between a sweating, hysterically cursing Hackman and the panic inside the train, where a gunman is going berserk. If the tension of this scene doesn't give you the shakes, nothing will. "The French Connection" stands as a personal triumph for both Hackman and director William Friedkin. With this work, both men keep up their track records of never having repeated themselves in their movies. Who else can make such a claim? Friedkin previously directed American History in action at the AMERICAN WAX MUSEUM m4 arhria vaaj'ra at InriapMoMC HaS and tha naar U.S.
