PHILADELPHIA DAILY HEWS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1,1972 7 Gals Make Waves at Navat Home By JOE CLARK When the Naval Home at 24th st. and Grays Ferry ave. broke its 130-year tradition of "men only" back in 1968, the old salts knew it would cause waves. Not WAVES as in Navy, but waves as in trou Its, 'I men. We were embarrassed.

Then a group of men at a table in the back yelled, 'Welcome I said it's nice to be a member of the crew. Where can get a beer?" Mrs. Clark says the hospitality has been like that ever since with a few exceptions. HOLDEN, a retired chief quartermaster, said he doesn't disapprove of the women "as such." "According to the rules of the home, they have just as much right as any enlisted man." But, he adds, "I want no parts of them. I say we're all not treated alike.

"They have wall-to-wall carpeting in their quarters, we don't. They have brand new wooden furniture, bedspreads, floor lamps. The rules say we should all be treated the same. We're not. I resent their privileges very much." Miss Evelyn Hope George, 63, was a lieutenant in the Nurse Corps during World War II.

"I feel like one of the boys," said Miss George, who is the home's shuffleboard Mrs. MARGARET P. CLARK one of the crew champ and acey-deiicey whiz. She's not bad at pool either. "It's a terrific place." "They're all fine gentlemen, but there are too many men," Miss George continued, noting the women who now number 8 are outmanned more than 32 to 1.

There are presently 258 male residents. ERNEST HOLDEN resents privileges ective agency for IS years. "I remember the first day I was here," she recalls "One of the other women said it was her habit to have a bottle of beer in the morning. Well, we went down to the canteen, opened the door and just stood there. It full of bled waters.

The women, however, felt it wouldn't cause a ripple. Both were right, depending on which side of the wave you're on. "Anyone who doesn't like it here needs her head examined," says Mrs. Margaret Phyllis Clark, who at 71 is the oldest resident of the women's quarters and was one of the original 10 women who checked into the home Nov. 20, 1968.

"WE FIGURED TO have trouble when we heard they were coming," says Ernest Holden, 79-year-old chairman of the home's recreation council. "They're like the rest of the women in the country, looking for more privileges than they're entitled to." Mrs. Clark worked for Naval Intelligence during World War I and later for the Veterans Administration.
