Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1975 Phila. Daily News Keen's Story-Telling Was Basis for Career The talent of telling a good story served J. Harold (Jeff) Keen well in his career as a newspaperman here and in his rare ability to keep friends over many years. Whether writing a column or conversing with friends Jeff Keen, who died yesterday at 79 in his home in the Wellington, 19th and Walnut was a natural story-teller.

Mr. Keen came to Philadelphia in 1925 and helped found the Daily News. He served as its city editor and managing editor from 1925 until 1943, meanwhile also writing a daily column and serving as drama critic. He continued his column for the Philadelphia Record from 1943 until it ceased publishing in 1947. He then was editor, successively, of the Philadelphia Jewish Times and the Philadelphia Exponent.

He retired in 1969. His wife, Inez, survives. 19102 Oxford Circle Fire Hurts 4 Three elderly residents and a fireman suffered smoke inhalation during an early-morning fire in a twostory row house on Eastwood St. near Magee in the Oxford Circle section. The fire broke out about 1:15 a.m. in the kitchen and was under control at 1:41 a.m. The flames were confined to the kitchen and dining room.

Esther Miller, 80, and Samuel Brooks, 78, were rescued by firemen from upstairs bedrooms. They were in satisfactory condition in John F. Kennedy Hospital. Henry Brooks, 76, who was found sleeping in the basement, was in satisfactory condition at Frankford Hospital. Fireman Thomas Eccleston, 34, of Ladder 28, was treated and discharged from Kennedy.
