(iPV Undefeated Los Angeles took the opening kick-off, drove 73 yards to score and rolled on over the San Diego Chargers Sunday 37-10. A crowd of 69,504 watched this initial regular season game between the National Football League Rams and their American Conference rivals from the border city. Los Angeles' vaunted defense overpowered the Chargers.

San Diego quarterback John Hadl was forced into four interceptions in the first half and the Rams converted three of them into three field goals. Hadl had been intercepted only twice in two previous league games. Roman Gabriel hit Jack Snow with a 17-yard scoring strike for the first touchdown and Gabriel's replacement, Karl Swee-tan, wound up the scoring in the final quarter on a 20-yard throw to Snow. David Ray booted three field goals, all in the first half, from 27, 10 and 38 yards, and the aggressive United Press International Art Malone, Atlanta running back, was swept off his feet Sunday by San Francisco's Bruce Taylor (prone) in Sunday's National Football League game at Atlanta. Atlanta won 21-20.

Eagles Bow to Redskins PHILADELPHIA, Pa. 111 Washington spotted Philadelphia an early touchdown Sunday and then combined ball control and an alert defense to smash the Eagles 33-21 in a National Football League game. The Redskins I im i the Eagles to only three plays from scrimmage in the third period. A pair of fumble recoveries and two pass interceptions set up four Washington scores. Redskin quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, who completed 14 of 28 passes for 139 yards, fired two touchdown passes, a 26-yarder to Jerry Smith and a five-yarder to Charlie Taylor.

Larry Brown, the Na-t i a 1 Conference's top rusher, gained 110 yards on 27 carries, including one for four yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Redskins, trailing 7-3, scored their first touchdown with less than a minute left in the second period when quarterback Rickie Harris intercepted Eagle quarterback Norm Snead's pass on the Eagle 37 and returned to the 23. Jurgensen hit Smith in the end zone three plays later. Linebacker Chris Han-burger set up the other Redskin touchdown when he picked off a Snead pass on the Eagle 21 and returned it to the nine. Jurgensen hit Taylor for the touchdown two plays later.

There will be no more nonconference games until some team finds itself in the Rose Howl. The Bij Ten nonconference record, now terminated, was spotty but, generally, not good. Purdue's starting 26-14 victory over Stanford Saturday, after its 48 0 loss to Notre Name, is the only result favoring a Big Ten team against a highly rated opponent.

The Big Ten won 11 names, lost 16 and tied one in a nonconference schedule which was not so rugged as some in the past. Minnesota's Gophers had the most difficult early tests, with Missouri and Nebraska, and lost both games. Some other Big Ten teams absorbed more crushing defeats. California, which is not much, beat Indiana 56-14. Notre Dame, which IS much, overwhelmed Purdue 48-0, (the same score by which Iowa lost to Southern California) then outclassed Michigan State 29-0.

The Gophers need not be counted out of the Big Ten race. Instead they may be very much in it. They are always slow beginners and strong finishers. This year, despite their two defeats, they have played better football than through a similar stretch last year. They were not bad at all against Missouri until the heat got them.

They did play some first-rate football in the loss to Nebraska Saturday. Their offense controlled the ball pretty well against the good size and great quickness of the Cornhuskers defenders. This is going to be one of the best offensive units Murray Warmath has had at Minnesota. The Gophers were feeble defensively. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Nebraska's attack is too much for anyone to handle.

Their three touchdowns against one of the best Southern California teams tells us something. When the season ends the record may tell us that Nebraska is the most versatile and potent offensive team in college football. The Gophers set their defense to stop Nebraska's speed. They set their linebackers wide with this in mind. They may as well have stayed with that plan even though it let Nebraska move easily inside.

If they had adjusted Nebraska would also have adjusted. The point is that Nebraska had more weapons than the Gophers could handle. It always had something with which to gain and, as I say, the Gophers will not be the last good team to find this out. When the linebackers played wide there was a heavy load on Bill Light in the middle. He played tremendously but the Huskers' first-rate offensive line was able to trap or turn the Gophers' tackles in and Light couldn't plug all of the holes.

Nonconference games suggest a few revisions in the placing of teams in the Big Ten race. Ohio State and Michigan, not unexpectedly, continue to be favorites. Where do you put Purdue, loser by 48-0 to Notre Dame, then a winner over third-rated Stanford. I prefer to notice the Stanford result because it indicated that Purdue has found a quarterback in sophomore Chuck Piebes. There isn't anything else in the Big Ten for which the Gophers cannot be a match, and they don't play Purdue.

I have a clear view of a first-division finish for them. If they can beat Ohio State and Ohio State can beat Michigan they may be right up there. Do you say the man is crazy to speak of the Gophers beating Ohio State? Oh, no. It can be their major and most rewarding project and they always play the Buckeyes pretty tough. LOUIS, Mo. UP) Jim Hart pierced Dallas' defenses for two second half touchdown tosses to lead St. Louis to a 20-7 National Football League triumph Sunday. The 26-year-old Hart's passes broke open a tight contest late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. First Hart found running back Sid Edwards for a seven-yard scoring pass, culminatinga 50-yard march.

When the Cardinals regained possession, Hart fired a pass from his own 41 and found fleet John Gilliam behind the Cowboys' Herb Adderly. The 59-yard play boosted the Cardinal lead to 20-0. Nevett returned the stolen pass 47 yards to the Giant 20 and only seconds later sub quarterback Edd Har-gett threw a 15-yard scor-ring pass to rookie Ken Burrough. It narrowed the New York lead to 10-7. Nevett's second interception killed the final Giant threat. With 3:13 remaining, he snatched a pass in the end zone after the giants had driven to the two. The Saints took the lead early in the fourth period when rookie Doug Wyatt blocked a punt, Al Dodd scooped it up at the Giant two and rolled into the end zone.
