It shocks trees into producing excessive value of $400, and the moraine locusts are each worth $320. The impressive total is $3,890.

Proper care includes many things: adequate watering, periodic trimming and fertilizing, preventive and corrective insect and disease control, repair and surgery of damages, and protection against possible storm damage, to be done during certain general times of the year. However, some of this work, insect control for instance, often derfiands exact timing. Least critical is i m-ing, which can be done any time. An old rule, "Trees should be trimmed ming is the repair of damaged bark. Such areas have to be cut back to where the bark adheres to the wood.

They should be pointed at top and bottom to form a diamond shape and painted with tree paint. All branches must be cut back flush with the limb from which they are removed. Any protruding stub is unsightly and slow to heal. Cuts over an inch in diamater are painted with a commercial tree paint. Smaller cuts heal rapidly without painting.

BECAUSE it is such a common practice, many people feel that topping trees is a proper procedure. It definitely is not! Topping makes trees downright ugly in the win when the saw is sharp," still holds. A possible exception is the trimming of maples, which will bleed if trimmed in late winter or spring. This bleeding, however, is not harmful and continues for only a short period of time. At worst it is only temporarily unsightly-Dormant pruning is practical.

It's simple to tell what's alive and what's dead. Dead limbs usually have dry, cracked, off-color bark. POETS WOULD have us believe that buds emerge in the spring, but actually they can be seen readily when leaves fall in autumn. counter 5 ft. counter 6 ft. inhibits disease and fungus attacks and greatly reduces the possibility of storm damage. It permits air circulation among the branches, admits sunlight, makes foliage larger-brighter and healthier and the tree more resistant to insect damage. Proper trimming includes the removal of all dead wood, weak or dying branches, broken stubs and water sprouts or sucker growth.

It also includes the i i or removal of overcrowded limbs and limbs that rub one another. Branches that have poorly formed, narrow -angle crotches usually should be sucker growth. It causes them to sprout many weak, storm-susceptible limbs, results in many dead stubs and shortens life expectancy. It never produces the desired result because the tree rapidly grows a soft, weak top that soon exceeds the height and density of the tree before it had been butchered. Numerous letters ask for advice on their care but this column has consistently refused advice other than to employ good professional care. We see all about us the results of topping, bad pruning and general mutilation at the hands of do-it-yourselfers, and unskilled tree men a few of whom even use linemen's spurs for climbing. This is why I urge thf hpst nrn- fessional Witmer care. Winter months are ideal for pruning. The time is also at hand for dormant spraying against scale and Dutch elm beetles before new leaves emerge.

Again, only the good professional has the equipment and know-how to do the job. This column strives to be helpful, however, in all phases of gardening and landscaping. Today's advice is no departure from policy. It comes from a competent professional, Robert G. Wright, arbiculturist for Bachman's, Minneapolis.

He says: THE ESTHETIC value we placed on shade trees varies greatly from tree to tree depending upon the individual's sentiment. An old box elder you played under as a child can well bo priceless to in spite of its being a "weed" tree. But trees have a monetary value, as well, which can be measured with surprising accuracy. Tree experts often are called upon to evaluate shade trees damaged or destroyed by windstorms for purposes of tax deductions or insurance claims, or as courtroom testimony when damaged by runaway vehicles or condemned for highway construction. These experts study the age, health, location and species and apply their findings to evaluation statistics established by the National Shade Tree Conference.

Here's a hypothetical example of what trees are worth. Suppose you have a white oak in your back yard that shades the patio. Its trunk is 16 inches in diameter. In the rock garden are two beautiful red maples, each 6 inches in diameter. In the opposite corner, hiding an unsightly telephone pole, is a stately sugar maple of 20 inches.

At the side of your house, screening the neighbor's garage, stands a 10-inch pin oak. The front yard is graced with two 9-inch moraine locusts. ASSUMING that each is a perfect specimen, a highly improbable situation, here is what they're worth: the value of the white oak is slightly over $1,000. The red maples are each worth $140. The sugar maple The pin oak has a removed.

So should low-hanging limbs that obstruct a view, or overly shade the lawn, or are too near the roof. Some limbs, however, which sweep gracefully down from otherwise uniform trees, add an artistic touch and need not be removed. You may spray or brush paint your bird cage either all gold, gold highlighted with white, or white highlighted with gold.

Pastels to match your home decor are also very pretty and smart. Finish your planting pan in the same manner. 2 There are many plants which grow well under these conditions. Some of them are the common English ivy, philodendron, the German ivy (with its deep green holly shaped leaf), the Chinese evergreen (an ideal center plant for the bird cage), the fancy leafed caladium (which runs from multicolored green leaves to leaves with striking red hues that lend that much color to the cage). 1 All-aluminum or xinc-cUd eteel Standard chain link or closer-woven Modernmesh Installation by factory-trained crews AS LOW AS $5.80 A MONTH UN 6-4961 or CA 2-3230 6417 PENN AVE.
