ACUSHNET GOLF EQUIPMENT MANAGER ALFRED MANUEL PESANO of the Minnesota Twins was recently barred from the Great Tomato Growing Contest which rages annually in Metropolitan Stadium's press room. The judge ruled that the Twins' manager should concentrate his skullduggery on the field of play. Al Pesano, sometimes known as Billy Martin, might nave won release from that suspension by certain measures. After all, the venerable judge's integrity does not go beyond reasonable limits. However, the manager may have made his suspension final by recent remarks.

He displayed hot Italian anger when the judge dared to challenge his assertion that the West Division of the American League was of equal strength with the East Division. The judge has learned that Senor Martin spoke ill of him and of his opinions in the presence of numerous media people. Still his case is not altogether hopeless. He has one avenue to reinstatement. After the current interdlvision home-and-home games are all played let him produce figures showing that the West teams have won as many games as the East teams.

The odds are against him, but it's his only hope. Aew Fighting Mini IT WAS A SATURDAY MORNING in a hotel lobby in Lafayette, last fall. There appeared a group of nearly 30 boys, magnificent physical specimens. You wondered who they were. Some one said, "That's the Illinois freshmen football squad.

They gave the Purdue freshmen a good licking last night." You were impressed. Now, midway through spring practice, coach Jim Valek of Illinois says, "This is the squad which will be the base for a Fighting Illini resurgence in football." Would these sophomores compare with the Ohio State sophomores who had much to do with that team's championship play last year? If you had seen them in Lafayette last October you'd be inclined to think so. A Sad Parallel SIXTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO George Barton and Billy Hoke boxed each other for $15 purses. The fights were illegal but condoned by tolerant police. During several such encounters they became friends.

Their lives ran parallel courses all these years, in the newspaper business, in sports and in friendship. Today they lie dead in separate mortuaries. They died within 36 hours of each other. On May 5, Mr. Barton sent a letter to Gov.

Harold LeVander asking to be relieved of his position as secretary of the Minnesota Athletic Commission. He gave as his reason failing health. Two days later he made his point, if you will excuse me for saying it, in just the way I imagine George saying it, with his small chuckle. Wherever I go in line of duty, to whatever city, one of the first questions I hear is, "How is my friend, George Barton?" Now I'll have to give a sad, final answer. Horsman Has Next-Time Ideas DUANE HORSMAN, Chatfield, middleweight, Will fight Doug McLeod again, this time in St.

Paul May 23. Although McLeod is not beating many opponents these days, he has shown he knows how to beat Horsman so far. McLeod loses round after round to Horsman while getting Horsman's long left hook timed. Then he slips across one right counter to the chin and turns the fight around. The first time it was for a clear decision; next time it was for a seventh-round knockout.

Whenever promoter Ben Sternberg has asked Horsman whom he would like to fight next, the reply has been, "McLeod." Horsman has some kind of a next-time thing about McLeod. You don't think it will cost him that rich return match with Pat O'Connor, do you? Neither do I.
