Great stuff, especially for a guy who's never shot under 100. Martelli, at best a casual golfer, called his wife from the next tee. It wasnt long before his friends, family and anyone else he could think of were being regaled (bored?) with the story.

He even called Geno Auriem-ma, the University of Connecticut women's coach whom he's known for years. "You have total disrespect for the game and you got a hole-in-one," an exasperated Auriemma said. Martelli's playing partners were former St. Joe's coach Jim Boyle and former Hawks equipment man Bob Geary. They finished the best-ball tournament with a 58 and a share of first place.

They also came away with a memory that, as the commercial says, is priceless. Hackers everywhere, rejoice. We have a new hero. COSTA IS MOBILIZING Frank Costa added another line to his football resume Sunday by leading the Mobile Admirals past the Houston Outlaws in Daily News Sports Writer When Penn State senior-to-be and former Julia Masterman star Andrea Garner sits down to write her "How I spent my summer vacation" essay, chances are, it will be livelier than what most of her classmates will come up with. That's because Garner was a late (virtually last-minute) addition to the 12-member USA Women's World University basketball team competing in Spain the next couple of weeks. She was picked Tuesday to replace UCLA's Janae Hubbard, who left the team for personal reasons. Garner, Penn State's leader in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots last season, should have no trouble getting acclimated to her new team. Her college coach, Rene Portland, is the head coach of Team USA and the Nittany Lions' Helen Darling is one of the team's guards.

"Certainly 'Dre will be able to fit in immediately because she knows the system," Portland said. "This is a great opportunity for her, and she brings international experience. She is familiar with the international style of play. I think this will be a perfect match and we're going to take advantage of it." Garner, a first-team all-Big Ten center, has played in several international competitions and was a member of last year's USA Women's Team Select that went 7-1 while touring Puerto Rico, Poland and Spain. Team USA was to depart for Madrid yesterday and begin play in a four-team preliminary tournament this weekend.

The United States will begin defense of its World University Games gold medal beginning July 5 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. But that's not all. The Penn State women's team will play five exhibition games throughout France, Monaco and Switzerland, Aug. 12 to 24. Purdue, which won the NCAA title last season, made a similar tour last summer.

The former St. Joseph's Prep grad (class of 90) was the first player selected in the RFL draft two years ago, but the league never developed.

When things started falling into place this winter, Costa went down to Alabama for a workout. Three days later, he was an Admiral. "I'll tell you, there's good competition in that league. I had a lot of fun with it," he said. Former Cowboys running back Sherman Williams, who scored the game's first touchdown on a 2-yard plunge, and cornerback Kenneth Gant were among Costa's teammates in Mobile.

Both won Super Bowl titles in Dallas. Like most players in the league, Costa, 26, hopes the RFL will lead to bigger and better things. "It was a good experience and I played pretty well," Costa said. "I'm going to stay in football shape and see what happens." PHIL 'ER UP Forget Payne Stewart's 15-foot putt the golf shot of the year happened Monday at Edgmont Country Club during St. Joseph's 11th annual Hawk Hoop outing.

Men's basketball coach Phil Martelli, described by one source as "not really the greatest golfer in the world, but he's getting the hang of it," stepped up to the par-3, 150-yard third hole. As the throngs in the gallery grew silent in anticipation, Martelli nailed his 6-iron with the same precision as Stewart struck his U.S. Open-winning putt. ty to purchase the vehicles at the sale price. said. "We're expecting a tremendous turnout so the innovative approach to selling used vehicles will make it easy and quick for anybody in the market for a good used car or truck at a very low price with no hassle. Wholesale buyers will be present to take trade-ins during this sale." We also have ten to twelve business managers who will help buyers arrange low-cost financing, as well as 4 bank lenders who will be present. We've got over 2 million dollars in inventory to choose from. Our total inventory will be close to 300 new and used cars and trucks.

We want to remind everybody that this is a one-day sale only. When our inventory has been reduced we will remove the sale prices and return to normal operations. Since we are a local business we would like to give back to the community.
