In fact, that's sometimes been his problem. Staebler is concluding his varsity career this winter as heavyweight with Wally Johnson's Gopher wrestlers. Last weekend, he launched that final season in grand style, winning his weight title in a quadrangular meet with Michigan State, Purdue and Northwestern.

"Staebler," explained his coach, "has never been pushed in wrestling. As a result, he's never pushed himself." Wally is delighted that this year looks different: "Staebler's aggressive, he's working hard he's serious." There are two reasons for this transformation, according to Wally, and he refers fondly to both as his "big dogs." One is Marv Mortenson, the other is Dick Enderle. Both are freshmen heavyweight prospects (and football players; and both have been giving Staebler a run in practice. Mortenson, from Grand Rapids, was state champion his senior year. Enderle, from Elbow Lake, might have been but for an injury.

Staebler's thinking on all of this? "I'm 10 pounds lighter at 235," said Big Jon. "That's helped some, but these kids have been making me work. And that's what makes you sharp." Minnesota's basketb a 1 1 team scrimmaged with Louis Hudson in action for the first time in nearly a month. Hudson's injured right wrist has been fitted with a new cast slightly less confining and padded with foam rubber. Hudson's progress as a left-handed shooter, considering the short time he's had to learn, is remarkable.

He shoots from short range with the protected right hand, but with limited success because he can't flex the wrist. "It's amazing," said Gopher coach John Kundla, "how well Louie has learned to shoot with the left hand. It'd take most people years. When he's healthy again, that left hand is going to make him an even better player." Hudson might see action this weekend against Indiana in Williams Arena, mendations from the coaches, doesn GAMES THKUJDAY Hopkini vt. Ktnnodv.

Cooper's goal came with only 41 seconds elapsed in the final period when Robbinsdale was short two men the ball out of bounds intentionally to stop the clock in order to substitute," said Crisler. "But, otherwise, everybody seems to like the rules as they are." The president of the University of New Mexico. Thomas L. Popejoy, says he is going on floor of the NCAA business meeting and demand that one-platoon football be returned. "I have my doubts that this will ever come on the floor," said Crisler.

"And, if the NCAA delegates decide to legislate on rules, then there will not be any need for our committee." Robbinsdale's victory kept it firmly in third place in the conference with a 6-2-0 record. Edina leads with 8-0-1 with Richfield second at 7-0-2.

WILLIAMS IS IN TT IS CERTAIN THAT TED WILLIAMS will become I one of the few to be elected to the Hall of Fame at the very first moment he has become eligible. He is, indeed, one of the major figures in the game, only a little removed from a class with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and such. If you have any doubt of this it would surely have been removed if Williams had not taken three years out of the very physical peak of his career for air combat duty in the Korean War. It says something for his boundless ability that he batted .356 in the season before the war, then, after three years absence from the game he did not play while in service, being too busy fighting he batted .342 in his first season back. Ted had his eccentricities.
