TIGERS' LEFT HANDER HURLS NO-HITTER FOR 4 INNINGS iflinneap oil's jflormng; Criutme i Handcuffs NHS on WSE1S Radio, TV 17 Comics 18 11 SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 1964 Stigman was charged with after Vic Power fielded his first major league er- McAuliffe's swinging bunt, ror for failure to cover first Dwight Siebler relieved The 'Mickey Thai Did It i Stigman. Bill Freehan, who returned to the Detroit lineup after a week's absence with a hand injury, blooped a broken-bat single into right field, scoring Horton. Lolich sacrificed Freehan to second base, with McAuliffe holding at third base. Wert walked to fill the bases. ARRIGO replaced Siebler.

With the infield in, Lumpe's lazy grounder bounced by shortstop Zoilo Versalles into center field for runs by McAuliffe and Wert to end the afternoon scoring. Detroit (5-3) moved Rich Rollins of the Twins said, "He had a good slider." Jimmie Hall of the Twins said, "He had a good curve." Rollins added, "Mainly, he kept the ball down and made you hit his pitch. He had control." CONTROL was the difference between winner Lolich and loser Stigman of the Twins. Stigman, was behind on most Detroit batsmen, and had virtually no control of his curve ball. The Tigers waited to spank the fast ball, knowing Stig would have to come in with it sooner or later.

It was no later than the first inning that the Tigers scored a run on Kaline's 1-1 single to center. Detroit made it 2-0 in the fifth inning when left fielder Harmon Killebrew played Don Wert's apparent line single into a two-base hit. Lumpe followed with a two-base hit into the right-field corner. Stigman left in the sixth inning as the Tigers added three more runs. Willie Horton singled to left.

The chunky Lolich worked 4 no-hit innings before Earl Battey of the Twins touched him for a two-out single in the fifth inning. Vic Power doubled high off the fence in left field with two out in the sixth inning, and Rich Rol- lins singled to left with two out in the seventh inning. Lolich, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher, struck out seven, walked only two and hit one batter.

"Pitching is the only thing I do left-handed," said Mickey, cooling off in front of his locker after the game. "I write and eat right-handed. I broke my reft collarbone when I fell off my trike as a kid, and ithe doctor advised my mother to make me use my left hand to strengthen the shoulder. I've been throwing left-handed ever since I started picking up blocks southpaw style." IT WAS A left-handed victory for the Tigers, since southpaw swinging Jerry Lumpe got three of Detroit's eight hits and batted in three runs. Lumpe beat out an infield hit off left-handed pitcher Dick Stigman of the Twins in the first inning and scored following a walk to Norm Cash on Al Kaline's single.

Jerry doubled home a run in the fifth inning off Stigman and singled off left-handed Gerry Arrigo for two more Detroit runs in the sixth inning. Lolich threw 78 strikes and 44 balls to tame the Twins. Lolich throws what he calls a cross between a slider and a curve. Lolich, who won five and lost nine at Detroit in 1963, his first- American League season, said he had never faced the Twins' right-handed power before, except this spring in an exhibition game at Knoxville, Tenn. The only two long balls of the day were Power's double and Harmon Killebrew's long fly to center in the ninth. Power's sixth-inning double might have cleared the old eight-foot fence in left, but instead it bounced high on the 12-foot screen. Killebrew's long fly was caught against the fence in the ninth inning by center fielder Don Demeter at the 400-foot mark after being held up by a strong cross-wind to right field. Wickersham stopped the Twins 3-1 Jn four hits in the second game. NORGE By JIM KLOBUCHAR Minneapolis Tribune Staff Writer Mickey Lolich exercised the left-hander's privilege Friday and began talking to himself in the fifth inning at Metropolitan Stadium. It was one of the wackier monologues of the early season.

"Twins," Lolich said, "get a base hit. Anybody." Lolich was in agony. He had pitched four hitless innings and the prospect of a no-hitter, to hear young Lolich tell it, was positively unbearable. Earl Battey relieved his misery with a single to center. Lolich, his peace of mind restored, finished with a comfortable three-hitter and his first professional shutout in the Tigers' 5-0 victory.

There is a conviction around the American League that the Twins will not do as well as they threaten to do if either of those knees fails to function as a healthy knee should. If both fail, then other teams in the league will go looking, for something besides the Twins to worry about. It is not in order to state flatly that the Killebrew and Battey knees will fail them for a season of play. It is in order, however, to say that we must still wait a while for proof that the betwecn-seasons operations were wholly successful. was removed from Friday's game with De-.

troit "for a rest." Midway through the ninth game of the season, it could not have been general fatigue which grounded him, but a necessary pause, probably, to advance the slow recovery which knee surgery requires. There have been indications by Killebrew's actions in the field that he still needs to be careful, and his batting average of .176 hints at some discomfort at the plate. Full recovery is promised in both cases. Meanwhile, we may hold our breath and think, "The sooner the better." DOWNSTAIRS AT THE MET PICTURE THE "TWINS ROOM" IN THE basement of Metropolitan Stadium.
