Miriam's Project, Fox said, provides a hot line for abused women to get help on everything from counseling to shelter to dental care and locksmiths. It's run by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia women's division, which serves with the Board of Rabbis as this year's "Sabbath" co-sponsor.

Arthur Ryan, a Presbyterian layman and former "Sabbath" co-chair, said the six women's stories in the documentary can be "very powerful and very distressing." He said they tell what people of faith can do and how they have failed. "Sometimes the religious community or clergy can make it worse by telling the woman to go back to her husband as an act of forgiveness," Ryan said.
