And hit opportunely, too, with a .270 average. Therefore you hear it said, "Versalles is playing well because manager Sam Mele fined him in spring training.

That's the way to handle Zoilo." Approval for construction of a $450,000 ice arena seating 3,300 for high school hockey was given Monday night by the Edina City Council. The arena, located near the Braemar area of Edina, would be used for Lake Conference hockey games. Cost of construction will be met by a $300,000 revenue bond and $150,000 in bonds purchased by a Citizens Committee headed by Win Stephens. Edina citizens will not be taxed for the arena, which is scheduled to be completed Nov. 1.

Lake Conference hockey games have been played in the Ice Center, which has a limited seating capacity. INDIANS WANT TOO MUCH Phils Topple LA, Koufax 'Jinx' 4-3 Donovan Available, But Twins Are Cool CULLUM'S COLUMN By Staff Writer CLEVELAND, Ohio Vet eran, pitcher Dick Donovan VIKING TICKET SALE NOW 25,000 Season ticket sales for the 1965 Viking home season have passed the mark, club officials said Monday. The figure now. stands at 25,078, approximately more than the total 1964 season ticket sale and within reach of the LOS ANGELES, Calif. UP) Philadelphia jumped on Sandy Koufax for three first-inning runs, including a homer by Johnny Callison, and went on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Monday night.

I always play the best I know how. "If the manager fines me for lack of effort or flouting his authority, that's his business. He's entitled to his opinion.

But I play the same, regardless. "I have no hard feeling toward the manager. That's all straightened out. I play baseball because I of Cleveland is available, but Manager Sam Mele of the Twins said Monday he didn't know whether he was interested or not. "We can al-ways use streaks by Koufax, who now has a 2-1 record.

Paul said, "I haven't talked to Calvin Griffith lately, but I'm always ready to talk trade with him." Cleveland has an over-supply of infielders, mainly second basemen, since Chico Salmon came out of the service, including Larry Brown, Chuck Hinton and Billy Mo-ran. The Twins, however, are not apt to deal for an in-fielder now.

Instead, they'll wait on Bernie Allen to strengthen his left knee and spell Jerry Kindall at second in mid-May. They think Allen' can do the job, although the only thing Bernie has proved thus far is that he can make the double play. He has not yet showed major-league range, nor a major-league bat. It is unlikely the Twins will take on Donovan at his age, with the salary load he commands. Griffith would prefer to gamble with a younger pitcher of potential.

pitching," Mele said. "The Indians offered us Donovan last year, too, but we didn't like the package." Donovan doesn't figure to left-hander had won six games and had not lost to Philadelphia since 1961. He had beaten them nine in a row. Koufax, who has been troubled by an arthritic condition, allowed seven hits before he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. Chris Short, 3-1, got the victory, with relief help from To correct another fallacy, it has been related that Versalles' best season with the Twins came in 1962 when they carried shortstop Orlando Martinez to goad Zoilo into his best performance.

Again, Versalles begs to differ. "My best season came in 1963," Zoilo said. "I made the American League all-star team that year." Versalles hit .261 in 1963, a low of .241 in 1962. He hit a high of .280 in 1961 and .259 last season. From the standpoint of handling chances afield, Versalles topped out with a .970 fielding average in 1962, with a high of 836 chances and 26 errors.

Last season he fielded .957 on 698 chances, 31 errors. Versalles makes plays few shortstops in the AL can match. He also makes errors, as any active in-fielder does. He made 30 errors in 1963, and 30 in 1961. To the opposition, the 24-year-old Versalles is one of the best combination hitting-fielders in the league.

He stroked 20 home runs in 1964 and batted in 64 runs. Versalles added, "I've had trouble with managers before. In 1960 at Charleston, manager Del Wilber fined me once. Maybe I had it coming. I get disgusted when I think I'm right.

I'm entitled to my opinion, right or wrong." TWIN TOPICS: The Twins' Camilo Pascual will pitch against Cleveland's Sam McDowell tonight. Catcher Earl Battey is ready for action with the Twins. AMERICAN LEAGUE Kou ox L. 2-1 6 7 3 3 I Old Lakers Respect, Do Not Fear Celtics WHEN WE HEAR COACH FREDDIE SCHAUS OF the Los Angeles Lakers say, of the Boston Celtics, "This has to be the greatest basketball team ever put together," we wonder, here in Minneapolis, how today's Celtics would have done against the original Lakers.

You ask George Mikan about it and he says, "We'd like to play them." Surely we are on safe ground when we say that the Los Angeles Lakers who lost to the Celtics in this year's championship round were far below the original Lakers. Only Jerry West, among the Lakers who played against the Celtics, would have made the starting five which Mikan led. Put West in with Mikan, Jim Pollard, Slater Martin and Vern Mikkelsen and the Celtics would have had something to do; or, let Herman Schaefer stay right where he was and forget about West. Those old Lakers would have shown the Celtics some things today's Lakers didn't show them. You ask John Kundla, who coached the original Lakers: "Compare the old Lakers and the Celtics position by position and we would be pretty impressive.

"The game is different now; but our gang would have adjusted to the changes. The Celtics have better reserves than we had; but that is because more reserve strength is coming out of the colleges. If we were playing now we'd have a stronger bench, too." FORD COMING AROUND YOU MUST HAVE NOTICED THAT Whitey Ford has pitched well for the Yankees in his two latest starts-well enough at any rate. When manager Johnny Keane said, "Don't count Whitey out on the basis of the trouble he had in spring training," he expressed what American League fans have known for some time that Ford's competitive drive overcomes handicaps which would get another pitcher down. The test is not complete for Ford; but, no matter whose uniform he wears, American League fans must wish him well.

You may have noticed, also, that Keane has been playing Elston Howard, "the best catcher in the American League," at first base. It goes to show that baseball is a game of one problem after another for its managers. Is Howard at first base because Joe Pepitone has been found wanting there or because Howard's throwing arm is ailing and opponents can run on him when he catches? Howard has been an outfielder, first baseman and catcher for the Yankees in the past. He can play first base; but it is as a catcher that he has kept the Yankee defense tied together. They will miss him there if his absence is extended.

CUFF STUFF Frank Lane says he doesn't think he will be chosen as the next baseball commissioner. Good thing, too. If Lane became commissioner, who would be left to tell the commissioner how to run baseball? Charlie Finley has a time clock against the outfield fence in Kansas City, similar to the 24-second clock used In professional basketball, to show when a pitcher has Used more than 20 seconds in delivering his pitch. Finley's real problem Is that his own pitchers, sooner or later, have to throw the ball. Headline: "Houston wins in 11: No Glare in Dome;" but there were three outfield errors.

If it isn't one thing it's another. Now the glare is gone, but so are the alibis. Rutgers track coach complains about the slow track for the Penn relays. What's the difference? Runners are not running against time. They are running against runners; and they are all on the same track.
