Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices 22 THE PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS 20, 1992 MOVE DEATHS Pianist Bobby sang songs by Marianne Costantinou Daily News Staff Writer Bellevue. Garrett also had a long stint at Raymond Haldeman's, and was the featured musician in other clubs around town. His piano playing recently won a Best of Philly award. "What was disGarrett tinctive about Robert Garrett Keilbaugh, a pianist, songwriter and singer known in Philadelphia's caberets and supper clubs as Bobby Garrett, died Thursday after a long fight with bone cancer. He was 35 and lived in Center City.

For the last several years, Garrett and his wife, Latin singer Minnie Acosta, were the dashing couple who serenaded lovers and other strangers at the Hotel Atop the him was the touch and feeling and emotion he felt when he was playing," said Acosta. "He was like an extension of the piano. The piano was an extension of him. He would touch your heart with his music. "He was my true inspiration and my true love." With his chiseled good looks, seductive voice, and broad square shoulders stuffed into a black tuxedo, many came to look at him almost as much as to hear him play, said a friend and a writer in the music business, Carol Wasilok.

He was all sophistication and elegance, she said. And great, great kindness. Even in his weakened final days, he was her cheerleader, boosting her morale and encouraging her writing. At the Bellevue and elsewhere, Garrett played mostly Broadway show tunes and popular standards with a jazzy, romantic touch. Gershwin and Cole Porter were his favorites, said his wife.

But he was so versatile that he became adept at playing and writing songs with the Latin rhythms preferred by his wife, a native of Puerto Rico. Garrett wrote the music and Acosta wrote the lyrics of "Mas Que un Recuerdo," Than a the theme song of Acosta's album. That song won the 1990 Billboard International Songwriting Contest in the Latin division, beating out more than a thousand entries. Another song they co-wrote, "Song for a Sailor," placed fourth in the contest in 1991. Garrett also dabbled with acting.

He had cameo roles in several films, including "Eddie and the Cruisers" and "Trading Places." In the new Woody Allen comedy, "Scenes from a Mall," Garrett is the bartender in a restaurant where Allen and Bette Midler have a fight. Garrett was born in Bethesda, and raised in Malvern, Pa. He was active in his church choir and in school theater productions. By the age of 19, he was directing dinner theater productions. He also is survived by his son, ARDUINO BABY ANTHONY MARK ARDUINO I1, premature son of Anthony and Denise (Kisseleff) Ardunio, brother of Katrina, born April 13, 1992 and left us too soon on April 19, 1992.

Mary's Episcopal Church, Lancaster and Louella avenues, Wayne, Pa. Harry Edward Smith Harry Edward Smith, who saved several people from a burning house in 1946, died yesterday at the Medical College Hospitals in Bucks County. He was 89 and had lived in Southwest Philadelphia. Smith's heroics which the city applauded with a Medal of Valor occurred when he was an officer with the Fairmount Park Police, a job he held for decades until his retirement in 1955, said his daughter-in-law, Emily Smith. He had been working as a guard in Rittenhouse Square Park when he saw flames shooting out of a nearby apartment building on Locust Street.

He dashed to the building, broke a window, rescued a baby and two adults, then helped firefighters rescue two other residents. In coming to their rescue, however, he fractured his spine when he broke the fall of a firefighter who fell off a ladder, she said. The back injury would haunt him the rest of his life. After retiring from the park police, Smith worked as chief of parking for the University of Pennsylvania, where he loved to attend all the campus sporting events, Emily Smith said. He was also a founder and director of the Police and Firemen Federal Credit Union, and served as president of the League of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic organization for police and firefighters.

Smith so much loved to work that his daughter-in-law joked with him: "If you retire from one more job, I'm going to kill you." Smith finally retired for good at the age of 75, she said, when a doctor diagnosed him with terminal cancer. But even then Smith refused to quit, outlasting the prognosis by nearly 14 years. "The doctor died, but he kept going," Emily Smith said. Personable and kindly, Smith was a devoted family man. He and the late Mary Elizabeth Kirk were married for more than 40 years.

She passed away in the early 1970s. Smith was very proud of his son, retired Army Brig. General Harry E. Smith Jr. of Warminster.

His grandson, a supervisor with United Parcel Service, also bears his name. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Nativity of Our Lord Church, Street Road, Warminster, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at SS Peter Paul Cemetery, Sproul and Crum Creek roads, Marple, Delaware County.
