VOLUME M. ALLIES, CLOSING IN ON TUNIS AND BIZERTE, OVERCOME RESISTANCE HITLER RUSHES AIR REINFORCEMENTS FROM RUSSIA TO AFRICA AS BIG SCALE BATTLES DEVELOP IN TUNISIAN CAMPAIGN NEOBHO, MO, WEDNESDAY, NOV. 25, 1942. SINGLE COPY FIVE CENTS (By the United Preat) The Axis is throwing all the planes, men and machines it can muster into an all-out effort to stall or stop the Allied drive in Tunisia. A German broadcast says these heavy reinforcements include tanks, assault guns, motorized units, antitank units, infantry and engineers.

Allied and Axis sources say the Germans also have pulled powerful air forces from the Russian front and sent them to the Axis islands of Sicily and Sardinia, 100 miles or more from Tunisia. Allied harbors and shipping are under almost continuous and heavy attack. The Axis claims the sinking of a British cruiser, and the damaging of a destroyer and seven Allied supply ships in the waters off the North African coast. A Rome communique reports that an Italian submarine has sunk an Allied steamer off Algeria. Italian torpedo planes, according to the high command, attacked and sunk a trans- Atlantic liner of 20,000 tons, a 6,000 ton merchantship and a third medium-sized vessel.

In London, a spokesman said there is a possibility that the Italian he said probably included six move into action off Algeria. But he added that an Allied naval force is waiting for it. Allied columns have advanced to within 24 miles of Tunis. Advanced units are battling repeatedly with Axis forward units and American parachutists have broken up an enemy armored column heading westward. But one Axis column has driven 70 miles inland from Gabes and Sfax to take an important highway center In the path of the advancing Allied forces.

The British Eighth Army in Libya is rolling steadily toward El Agheila the Germans are expected to make a strong stand. The main body of the Eighth Army has passed Agedabia. Another British force is at the desert Oasis of Jalo, probably preparing lor a drive to the northwest to join the Eighth Army In hitting Fl Agheila from two sides. The political action regarding "North Africa centered in London, Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden faced a barrage of questions in the House of Commons regarding the political policies in North Africa, particularly with reference to Admiral Darlan. He asked if the point had been reached where a General in the field decides the alliances of the United "Nations.

Eden replied that Lieutenant General Elsenhower's arrangements with Admiral Darlan were made as Commander of forces, and under the authority of President Hoosevelt. But it is headed toward Kotel- nikovski on the way to the Black Sea, and it might be intended to parallel a drive down the Eton river from the west to cut off the fustrat- ed German armies in the Caucasus. The Germans themselves say the Russians are continuing their strong infantry and tank attacks.

A Berlin radio broadcast virtually confirms the Nazi danger of being boxed up by insisting that the Russians have not brought their forces but only about 30 miles remain for the ring to close in the west. "Despite repeated warnings," G. C. Ashley, ODT district manager, declared, "many commercial motor vehicle operators in this district still do realize, apparently, that they must have Certificates of War Necessity for their vehicles. "Not only will it be impossible to purchase gasoline for commercial motor vehicles after December 1 without these Certificates, but the Certificates also will be needed to purchase tires and spare parts. "Operators who have not yet submitted applications for Certificates of War Necessity for their vehicles haven't an hour to lose," Mr.

Ashley declared. "Applications for Certificates are not coming in fast enough. Unless there is an immediate increase in the number of applications received, it will be Impossible for the ODT to issue all Certificates before December 1. "General Order ODT No. 21, under which trucks, buses, taxicabs and other commercial motor vehicles are required to carry Certificates of War Necessity originally was scheduled to go into effect November 15.

GAS BOOK REGISTRATION IS CLOSED UNTIL AFTER DEC. 1ST Registration of passenger car owners for gasoline ration books will be closed after today until December 1, it was announced by rationing board officials this morning. Some persons failed to register for their basic ration books last week during the regular period of three days allotted for the purpose, and the ration office has been attempting to take care of their tardy registration this week. However, other business of the office now requires attention and the further registration of this class will have to be deferred until later.

(By the United Frets) The Russians are raining hammer blows on the German armies that have been caught in i pocket around Stalingrad. Two powerful Soviet columns are racing towards each other over the frozen wastelands west of the Don river elbow.

I With only 30 miles between them, I they are driving to box in the entire German forces in the bend of the perhaps the entire Nazi Stalingrad army. Prom the north, more Red Army forces are rolling across the upper arm of the river bend and driving the fleeing Germans and Rumanians deeper into the closing trap. Within the city itself, the successful defenders, now joined by a column that broke into the city from the north, are hurling back the enemy troops in a determined offensive of their own. The army newspaper Red Star says Russia is fighting for the complete extermination of the enemy. German to Moscow mounted in less than a week's fighting to more than 160,000, including the remnants of three entire divisions which were captured complete with their Commanding Generals and staffs.

There are unconfirmed reports that the German command has ordered a general withdrawal from the entire Stalingrad salient to prevent complete disaster. (Bn the United Prett) American and Australian jungle fighters are slowly driving Japanese invasion forces in New Guinea back into the sea. The bodies of hundreds of dead Japs lie strewn over the swamps, beaches and jungles around Buna-; Gona where the Allies are making their final assault on the enemy's last defense line.

Artillery is in full swing on both' sides with thundering barrages churning up the entire 15-mile bat- tleline. Bayonet and pistol duels are' common since the opposing forces, are separated by only a few, yards at some points. The Allies are making slow progress for they have to silence one concealed machine gun nest after another. The Yanks and the Aus- sies already have cleaned dozens of Jap snipers from camouflaged nests in coconut palm trees. For a change, the enemy realizes what it is like to be without protection.

Allied planes are pounding at the Japs day and night without havoc on their artillery emplacements and supplies. But if Jap planes failed to show up in New Guinea, they were busy elsewhere. Eighteen of them raided Port Darwin in northern Australia during the- night. Results-no damage and two raiders shot down.

In retaliation, Allied bombers smashed the airfield at Lae, 150 miles north of Buna and attacked Timor Island from where the Darwin raiders probably came. The news from Guadalcanal is meagre, but indications are that the Japs are building up to what may be a decisive land struggle for the island.
