But when the hardhats feel their livelihood is endangered, law and order be damned. L. Cunningham Thursday, July 6, 1972 Poems and Politics Ezra Pound is in trouble again. Pound, variously described as "this difficult individual," "Old Ez" and the "flaming-haired madman of American poetry," has had a troublesome career.

His problem? A distinct talent for straddling the razor's edge where politics and poetry meet. Pound, now 87, spent 12 years in a mental hospital after World War II. That "sentence" was. in lieu of a. trial on treason charges stemming from his anti-semitic wartime broadcasts from fascist Italy.

When the war ended Pound was detained by the Allies in Pisa to await trial. The trial never came. While in Pisa, Pound wrote a series of poems, The Pisan Cantos, which won for him the prestigious.

Bol-ingen Prize amid much protestation from American intellectuals. How could an American poetry prize be awarded to an avowed fascist, the protesters asked. Now, 23 years later, Pound is again the center of controversy over a literary prize. A group of eminent writers and critics recommended Pound be awarded the annual Emerson-Thoreau Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. But the Academy's governing council vetoed the recommendation on "moral grounds." It's the centuries-old battle between art and politics.

Can, say, a Communist, atheist, fascist or any other type of what a given society considers to be an absolute rascal can such a man create works of art, or additionally in Pound's case, influence others to create works that are spiritually uplifting, humane and genuinely beautiful? Artists have never been particularly praised for their morality. More often they were persecuted for their immorality. F. We recall the minor flap in Philadelphia over naming a bridge for. Walt Whitman, an alleged homosexual, who also happened to be the greatest poet America has ever produced. Pound never reached the heights of Whitman. Few poets have.

Pound's poems were mostly experimental, way-out, obscure improvisations. But they were the stimulus for a whole generation of American writers and artists and a whole emerging modern Whitman literary style. Pound himself promoted the works of James Joyce, Robert Frost and T. S. Eliot.

America owes him a few prizes for those achievements. As for his tormented political views America owes those the chance to be forgotten.
