Pound, variously described as "this difficult individual," "Old Ez" and the "flaming-haired madman of American poetry," has had a troublesome career.

His problem? A distinct talent for straddling the razor's edge where politics and poetry meet. Pound, now 87, spent 12 years in a mental hospital after World War II. That "sentence" was. in lieu of a. trial on treason charges stemming from his anti-semitic wartime broadcasts from fascist Italy.

Pound's poems were mostly experimental, way-out, obscure improvisations. But they were the stimulus for a whole generation of American writers and artists and a whole emerging modern Whitman literary style. Pound himself promoted the works of James Joyce, Robert Frost and T. S. Eliot.

America owes him a few prizes for those achievements. As for his tormented political views America owes those the chance to be forgotten.
