Steve Klessel frtres Up on Hkls Sun Nightmarish Situation By STEVE KLESSEL "I'm giving up," said Jos Hanover yesterday. "Seeing's believing. Gen. Canale will not run in The Garden State. In fact, he left Sot Ohio this morning." So ended the tale 01 a manf who came the closest to be- in his waking hours, owner-trainer Jack Price says, he isn't worried.

He 1 A I ignores the comments all aiound that it's a big gamble he's taking putting ing The Optimistic Optimist in Racing. Just for the fun of it, the Tennessee lawyer had sent Judge Martin, a maiden, to Garden State last year to run last in the world's richest race. And he had come East again this year with another steed, Gen. Canale, to run in the big race again. But Gen.

Canale, a winner at Thistle Downs, wasn't able to beat a horse in a six-furlong allowance race against up $10,000 to make Carry Back eligible for The Garden State when there's such a big risk the horse might not even get out of the starting gate. In his waking hours, Price says, he's confident Carry Back will get away with the field in the big one Saturday. He doesn't think there is much chance the two-year-old colt will stand still when the gates open, as he did in the Champagne Stakes last out. Further, Price beliees he has a good shot at some of the prize, even the major part of it. But then there are the nightmares.

"They started one day last week after we had Carry Back in the gate for practice," he reveals. "This was after the Champagne and everybody had been recalling that his dam, Joppy, had been barred from racing because she consistently refused to break. Well, this day I sent my stable jockey, J. R. Layton over to work with the colt in the eate.

There were a lot of horses going by and Carry Already Ten In Corner LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UPI). Cassius Clay, who won the Olympic light-heavyweight championship, has signed a professional contract with 10 Louisville businessmen which will insure him a minimum ot $18,000 over the next two years. Among the provisions of the contract are the following: 1 Payment immediately of $10,000 cash with no strings attached. 2 A guarantee ot $6,000 per year for the duration of the contract if Clay's earnings do not reach $6,000 in a given year.

3 Two additional payments of $4,000 each year for the next two years no matter how much Clay earns if he earns nothing. 4 Clay and the 10-member group will share earnings, with the group paying all expenses of management and training. Clay Saturday night will meet Tunney Hunsaker of Fayetteville, W. at Freedom Hall here. TO i OT Back did the same thing he did in the Champagne just so-so opposition Tuesday.

"He didn't like the track," was the way Hanover put it. For even Joe Hanover, the handwriting was on the wall. In other developments relative to Saturday's The Garden State: Clear Spring Stable's Great Scope and Mrs. Dorothy J. 1 Zinman's Randero were de- clared definite starters.

Because that night, the nightmares started. I dreamed I walked past Carry Back's stall and there was the colt singing, Mv Mammy Done Told Me Closed Four Lengths The nightmares haven't been quite so bad since Carry Back broke with the field in a division of the Trial last Saturday. And he ran impressively, with tough racing luck evidently keeping him from an on-the-board finish. He bore out slightly on the first turn, dropping back from his good-breaking second to ninth. Then, making a move, he was caught in close quarters at the far turn and had to be cased back.

When clear in the stretch, he closed four lengths, finishing only a length behind Intensive and Itsa Pender Sick, Pigou Bout Off BOSTON (UPI). "I thought he ran a winning race in the Trial, "Price said. "Except for the breaks, he seemed to have run the best." As in many racing families, the horse is officially reg-j istered as owned by Price's wife, Catherine The Prices are from Cleveland and bought Carry Back's dam, Joppy, for and the stallion service was part of a package deal. He's now won over $100,000. "I was boarding Joppy several years ago at my farm," Price says and when it came time to pay, the owned didn't have $150 for the bill. He offered me the mare in payment and I gave him $150 extra in cash.

Shortly after, I sold the farm and shipped Joppy and two other mares to Florida. On the way, I made a package deal for three services to Saggy. The Saggy -Joppy mating produced Carry Back, who was foaled at Ocaia Stud in Florida. You know, both Roving Minstrel and Bronzeruliah were raised at Ocala, too." No Ponies, Thanks Saggy was a sprinter who won lasting fame by up-; setting Citation in the Chesapeake Trial. But Price believes Carry Back can go a distance.

"He's given every indication he can," Price points out. "We had a good mare, Outer Space, by Saggy who won at nine furlongs." One thing about Carry Back he detests ponies. "You will never see a pony leading Carry Back to the post," Price says "Anytime he's around one, he develops a temper. We had one in a van next to him in the spring and he tried to jump over the stall to get to it." Carry Back has run 18 times, inning only "three. Price attributes many of the defeats to tough luck.

"Look how often he's been right there against real good ones," the Ohioan declares. "That record shows he's got class. He's never run an inexcusably-bad race. CALL COLLECT Putting Car Before Horse Trainer Angelo Bovello owns part of a horse and part of a car, but he won't be going: anywhere for a year. Garden State Park's board of stewards suspended him for that term yesterday for violating several rules of racing.

Bovello claimed the horse Flint River for S7.500 on Aug. 22 Atlantic City. But he sold one-half interest in the animal the following day, thus violating Rule 141, which prohibits sale of a claimed horse within 30 days of the claiming. Bovello also violated Rule 215 when he gave an interest in the horse to an automobile dealer as a down payment on his car and failed to register said Interest with the authorities. It was not made clear whether Bovello still owned the part of the horse that eats and the part of the car that drinks.
