1 PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 1913 43 Is Nilsson Kidding Us with His Wev; Album? One thing Harry Nilsson's got is courage. It's hard to picture anybody with a hit rock album turning to a conductor and arranger like Gordon Jenkins to put together FRI. SAT. SUN. On Record By Rich Aregood night peciple SUNDAY JAM SESSION FROM 3 P.M.

1 j' i. Jmm umm mi 'm um an album of songs like As Time Goes By" and "For Me and My Gal." It's even harder to imagine anybody actually making the whole thing work, but Nilsson's "A Little Touch of Schmils-son in the Night" (RCA) works beautifully. Nilsson is definitely not the Tony Bennett type we're used to hearing on these perennials, but his vocals give the songs' new life. He may have his tongue rammed clean through his cheek, but it doesn't show. The songs are given real respect and Nilsson sings them beautifully.

IT'S WEIRD, but it's good. "Previous Connections" (Track) returns Speedy Keen, who sang with the late (and lamented) Thunderclap Newman group a couple years ago. His high voice does some nice work on good songs, mostly his own. "Sweet Bonnie Bramlett" (Columbia) is her debut solo record. There's something missing.

Her delivery, strangely enough for a white singer, seems a little too for the white funk accompaniments. There are good spots, but also loose ends. "Soul Makossa" (Atlantic) is the original version of the hit from Africa. Manu Dibango does beautiful Afro-Latin music, full of catchy rhythms and jazz-flavored horns. Truly fine.

Nilsson NOW APPEARING TO SUNDAY CATHEDRAL plus BEHNI JOHES ADDED SATURDAY NITE ONLY THE MERCELAS RECORDING STARS "BLUE MOON" "SUN. DISC NITE" LARGE DANCE FLOORS OPEN TILL 5 A George Harrison's "Living in the Material World" (Apple) is the best record any of the former Beatles have done separately. Harrison's production and songs are totally good. The concept rich rock star and religion works almost as well. "Shotgun Willie" is Willie Nelson's debut for Atlantic Records.

He is also the label's first country act. Nelson is real country, not a hip version of it. The record has some ups and downs, but Nelson makes "Whiskey River" and Bob Wills' "Bubbles in My Beer" and "Stay All Night" real winners. You've got to be real country to sing "Whiskey River" and its lyrics about drowning one's sorrows over a lost lady. KINGS HIGHWAY MT.
