Sentinel Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1995 D-7 For safety's sake, keep appliances unplugged tal, where the girl was pronounced dead. The boy was hospitalized in critical condition." And now, dear readers, one more word from Ann: It takes only a second for a heart-breaking tragedy to occur. Please keep your electrical appliances unplugged and out of the reach of young children. Dear Ann Landers: My family was invited to a relative's house to go swimming and have dinner.

When our relatives issued the invitation, they said they planned to eat at 6:30. I was reluctant to accept because our youngest child, a toddler, goes to bed quite early and I didn't think it would be wise to keep him up that late. We agreed to be there at 3 p.m. and have dinner earlier. When we arrived, the husbands and children went to the pool, and the wife told her husband to be back at 5:30 to start up the grill.

I began to feel uneasy when she brought out three medium-sized steaks to feed four adults and three children. When she used an alcoholic beverage to marinate the steaks, I told her to please leave the alcohol off mine because I'm pregnant. That's when I found out she was only planning to prepare dinner for three. When the meat was done, she allowed me to share my steak with my children. However, there weren't enough vegetables or potatoes to go around.

I asked if there were any more, and she said, "No, but you can take some off everyone else's plates." I was appalled. By the time we actually sat down, it was 7 p.m. My kids were hungry and cranky, and so was I. That small amount of steak was all we had. These people are my husband's relatives, and I didn't want to start anything.

My husband wasn't aware of what was going on, and I didn't want to go into it. As soon as "dinner" was over, we left. There is no way we can duck future dinner invitations, which I dread. Any advice for next time? Dumbfounded, No State Please Dear D.F.: Yes. Eat at home before you go over there.

Gem of the Day: It is no compliment to be told, "Your mind is like a blotter. You soak up everything." Remember, blotters get it all backward. Here's the article.

Bless you for sending it on. "A 4-year-old girl was electrocuted and her 3-year-old brother critically injured when one of them dropped a plugged-in hair dryer into the tub with them. "The county sheriffs deputy said the children were in the tub when their mother left them for a moment, and one child apparently got out of the tub and returned columns about the impor tance ot unplugging kitchen appliances when not in use. I am enclosing an article that appeared in the International Association of Electrical Inspectors News. It is gripping testimony for unplugging BATHROOM appliances as well.

Please print this article in your column so that parents may learn from it. My heart goes out to the mother of the children involved in this tragic accident. Thomas W. Schmid, executive director, Ann Landers with a hair dryer that was plugged in. The dryer was apparently then dropped into the tub.

(R) (1 :00) 84418 Take a suit, any suit By Phillip Alder We have all seen magicians who offer a deck of cards to a "victim." The person takes a card, any card. At the end of the trick the magician will name the card. There are many variations on this theme. At the bridge table, it may be a matter of deciding not which card to pick, but which suit to pick. Sometimes this happens in the bidding and sometimes in the play.

Today's deal is an example of the latter. After North had made a limit raise of three spades, South, who might have opened two no-trump, took a shot at the slam West led the club king. South won with the ace and cashed his top trumps, learning that he had a loser there. Now South's only chance was to discard both of his club losers before West could ruff in and cash the club queen. As he had so few diamonds, South attacked that suit first.

However, West ruffed the third round and cashed a club trick: one down. "Wow, how unlucky can one be!" exclaimed South. "We have only five diamonds and they break 6-2." "True," said North. "But suppose West doesn't ruff the third diamond. What do you do then?" "I play on hearts, of course," replied South sarcastically.

"And you need West to have at least three hearts to make the contract. So you should play hearts before diamonds. And when West turns up with four, you take that discard first. Then it doesn't matter that West has only two diamonds. When he ruffs in, you have no club loser left." 1995 NEA Celebrity cipher Daytime movies VCR Plus The number at the end of each program listing is a PlusCode.

That's because Hindman's character, Wilson, is always photographed with his face mostly hidden by a fence, or a floppy hat, or shadowy lightning. Wilson is the next-door neighbor of the main character, Tim Taylor (Tim Allen), and he often dispenses his wise advice to Tim from behind that backyard fence.

The character of Wilson was a collaboration between Allen and the producers, Hindman said this week during an appearance at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "I like the anonymity," he said. "I like being able to go out to a restaurant, a bar, whatever, and not be recognized and harassed like everybody else would be." However, Hindman's mother was initially annoyed at not being able to see her son's face. "But now she's my biggest fan," he said. "And she complains when she 'can' see me.

But now, the Arizona-born actor is happy where he is.

"It's wonderful being on the top-rated show on television," he said. "Because at my age, it hit right at the time where it can set me up financially for the remainder of my very short life." Will we ever see Wilson's face? "I don't think we'll ever see him, no," he said. On Jan. 18 1778: English navigator Capt.
