By Derrick Mahone Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer ATON ROUGE Southern University was playing not to lose; Jackson State was playing to winSaturday night. After losing twice this season because of fourth-quarter breakdowns, JSU finally won in the last period with a combination of aggressive defense and risk-taking on offense. Laurin Gavin made the biggest play of JSU's season by sacking Southern quarterback Eric Randall as time ran out for a 24-21 upset win over No. 14 Southern before 27,801 stunned fans. "It was possibly the biggest play of his career," JSU coach James Carson said.

"I know it was the biggest play of the season." That sack, before the second-largest crowd in Southern history, helped the Tigers improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Southern, which lost its first SWAC game in Pete Richardson's two-year tenure, dropped to 4-2 and 3-1. JSU has beaten Southern five straight times in Baton Rouge. "We knew we were legit," Tigers tailback William Arnold said. "We beat the best.

We worked all week on execution." Said wide receiver LaShan Ausmer "This is a big step toward our goal of a SWAC championship." fourth quarter, with two touchdowns by Hampton and a 28-yard field goal by Rock Dean. Trailing 21-7 in the fourth, JSU had the ball on Southern's 15-yard line on a foutth-and-10 play. Carson elected to go for the first down. Asberry's pass was picked off by Jerry Wilson, but the play was nullified by a roughing-the-passer penalty. Two plays later, Hampton scored on a 1-yard run.

"At that time we still needed two scores," Carson said. "I figured it was a good time to go for it." Faced with a fourth-and-4 on the Jaguars' 23, Carson decided to gamble again. A pass interference call in the end zone produced another first down for the Tigers. JSU had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Dean with nine minutes left, making it 21-17. After jumpingto a 14-0 lead at the half, Southern only got one touchdown in the second half, a 22-yard run by fullback Donny Gales.

"We took a physical beating," Richardson said. "We have to regroup and come back. We made too many mistakes going up against a good team like Jackson State." Southern faces a major showdown with Alcorn State Saturday in Lorman on ESPN2. A loss by either team will put them out of contention for the conference title. Carson said his team can't celebrate too long with a game at ninth-ranked Grambling next.

"I'm going to think about Grambling tonight," Carson said. "By no means are we going to rest on this win. It is a shame this win has to be short-lived. This is a big win down here in Raton Rnntrp ern held a 14-7 lead. On the ensuing drive, Fuller It was even sweeter for JSU quarterback Darrell Asberry, a Baton Rouge native.

Asberry played at Southern Lab, which sits adjacent to Southern University's campus. The high school team played all its home games at Mumford Stadium. After being benched for one series in the second half by offensive coordinator John Shannon to settle his nerves, Asberry finished with 197 yards on 17-of-33 passing and two interceptions. "This win is real sweet," Asberry said. "The butterflies were in my stomach.

I knew I had to be a player that produces. I can't lead this team from the bench. Coach Shannon pulled me because he realized I was nervous. I thank him for it. I know this show can roll with me or without me." Said Shannon: "You can learn a lot from standing on the sidelines.

We wanted to show him what was happening in the game. I'm extremely happy for Darrell." While Asberry did a steady job of leading the offense, the main weapon was running back Maurice "Mo" Hampton. The junior from Jackson scored all three of the Tigers' touchdowns. He had runs of 19, 1 and 3 yards. He finished with 55 yards on 12 carries.

Arnold, who sat a lot in the fourth quarter, was JSU's leading rusher with 59 yards on 14 carries. "Mo was hot," Arnold said. "I'm just happy with the win." Shannon said he wasn't disappointed in Arnold. "Mo was on a mission," Shannon said. "William played good." JSU scored 17 points in the missed a 41-yard field goal, but the Jaguars got the ball back after William Arnold fumbled on a pitch.

Donny Gales scored on the next play on a 22-yard run. Fuller kicked the PAT as Southern increased its lead to 21-7 with 7:46 left. BATON ROUGE Jackson State's 24-21 win over No. 14-ranked Southern University on Saturday at Mumford Stadium was a sweet victory for linebackers coach David Geralds. Geralds played at Southern from 1974-77 before playing five years of professional football.

He was also head coach at Southern Lab from 1992-94. The high school, where JSU quarterback Darrell Asberry played, is adjacent to the Southern U. campus. "I love this win," Geralds said. "I've always dreamed of coming down here and winning.

It has been in the back of my mind all year. I just wanted to take each game week by week, but I was ready for this one. I'm just happy." Good omen: One of JSU's buses broke down on the trip here, forcing the team to be transported to the stadium in two shifts. JSU asked game cials to extend the kickoff until all the players and coaches arrived. The 7 p.m.

scheduled start was 12 minutes late getting under way. "It was bothering me, but I tried not to let the players see me worry," said JSU head coach James Carson. Kimble is back: Former Southern head coach Gerald Kimble is back in the press box this season, but he isn't working for the football staff. Kimble, who works in the Southern athletic department, is the public address announcer for the Jaguars. Kimble, who was fired after the 1991 season, was 14-18-1 in three seasons.

FOURTH QUARTER Hampton capped a 10-play, 76-yard drive with a 1-yard run with 13:19 left. JSU was kept alive on a fourth-and-10 play when Southern was called for a roughing the passer penalty after Asberry threw an interception. JSU pulled to within 21-17 when Dean kicked a 28-yard field goal with nine minutes left. Bo Lewis intercepted Randall and returned it to the JSU's 25.
