Sun. Canton Chapel Visit Sat. 4-8 P.M. Briggs in a Neshoba County Fair speech in August, said Friday's show of GOP togetherness wouldn't affect his decision. "Earlier this week, Eddie Briggs told one group of Republicans that he was 75 percent sure he'd run for governor.

I know people who will still give you an even-money bet that Briggs will run for governor," Hall said. "Some of the strongest encouragement I'm getting to run for lieutenant governor is from Fordice people. I am confident the governor will step aside and let the best man win if I make that choice," said Hall, a 19-year legislator. Fordice said he and Briggs "can't have any control over who's running for what office." Fordice said he and Hall had not discussed the matter. Democratic state Auditor Steve Patterson, who already has told key audit staffers he was plotting a challenge to Briggs, could not be reached Friday.

Learn to appreciate 'neighbors' Problem: As global boundaries become smaller, Americans may be prone to expect people of other cultures to become "Americanized." Solution: Help promote goodwill among people of all countries. "Just because we're a prominent country in the world doesn't make our culture more important than others," said Nancy Rogers, assistant director of international programs at the University of Mississippi. She offers these tips: I Recognize trouble areas in understanding another culture. "We all seem to understand or accept people from other cultures in their quest for family unity, religious convictions, power and justice, but we tend to misunderstand when we face what would seem to be smaller differences like language, food, clothing and manners," said Rogers. Make an effort to mix with people from other countries.

"We are prone to think differences lie with others, and not with ourselves. Associating with someone from another culture can be a real eye opener." said Rogers. Remember that language is the key to understanding. One way to begin learning another culture is to stay in business travelers' hotels and not in tourists' lodging when traveling in a foreign country. I Expect foreigners to be surprised at some American "standards." Nursing homes for the elderly, day care, affinity for sweet foods and the number of overweight people are a few examples of what some seem to find amazing. Be aware of possible clashes in greetings, small talk, manners, voice intonation, etc. Open your home to a person from another culture. Consider setting aside a few hours to host a person from another country in your home.
