5D COURIER-POST, Monday, February 17, 2003 BASEBALL Healthy Lieberthal has Bowa smiling Internet have time to waste getting Online? of Busy Signals or Poor Service? mier fouled a ball straight up and off his face. He had a bruise under his left eye after Sunday's workout. Aced: Kevin Millwood has always been the third or fourth starter in Atlanta behind pitchers like Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine. But Bowa said he's had the look of a true ace so far in this camp. "I've seen him already talking to some of the young guys," Bowa said "I'm sure as the spring progresses you're going to see more pitchers migrate toward him and pick his brain.

Any time you pitch with Glavine and Maddux for a long period of time, you're going to learn quite a bit about pitching just by listening. "He might be underrated with media and people who watch baseball games, but the people who put uniforms on and hitters who have to face him, he's not underrated at all." 0- By KEVIN ROBERTS Courier-Post Staff CLEARWATER, Fla. The Phillies are hoping Mike Lieberthal is all the way back this year. In fact, Phillies manager Larry Bowa is planning on it. "I see no reason why Leeby can't catch 140 ballgames," Bowa said.

"He looks great. I thought he looked good last year, but this spring he looks even better." Lieberthal has been healthy enough to catch 140 games in a season just once in his career his breakout season of 1999, when he caught 145 games, hit .300 with 31 homers and made his first all-star team. Lieberthal has never come close to that since, because he hasn't been able to stay healthy. Ankle injuries limited him to 108 games in 2000 and a devastating knee injury wiped out 2001. Lieberthal stayed on the field all year last season, but clearly wasn't all the way back.

But he hit .300 after the all-star break, including a .319 August with eight home runs, and looked like the Mike Lieberthal the Phillies remembered. This spring, Lieberthal said he's 100 percent again, and like everyone else, he's excited about the team in front of him. "This pitching staff looks like it's going to be fun to catch," Lieberthal said. "Millwood has established himself, you know he knows what he's doing. Wolf has taken it to another level, he's becoming an elite pitcher.

And Padilla has unbelievable stuff. "The bullpen has a lot of veteran guys. You know what you're going to get from them. If the young guys in the rotation come through, this is going to be a good staff." Numbers game: Bowa said he hasn't decided whether the Phillies will carry 11 pitchers or 12 this year. He's carried 12 in each of his last two years, and may be leaning that way again.

If so, that means the Phillies may once again have only Tomas Perez on reserve for the middle of the infield. If the Phillies can take 11, that might clear the way for Nick Punto to make the team and give the Phillies a bit more flexibility on the bench. But the Phillies would need the rotation to be stable and pitching consistent innings, and a return to form from Turk Wendell. If the Phillies have to baby Wendell through another season of injury, they'll need more depth in the bullpen. "Turk is a question mark," Bowa said.

"Plesac is a situational guy. That might mean we have to take 12 pitchers. If Turk is back where he was, then maybe we can think about 11." Look out: Rheal Cormier has had a history of weird injuries in his brief Phillies career he showed up for his first spring training with a bad back that stiffened up on him as he drove to camp and Sunday he added another one. So Duckworth went back to the basics.

The result two strong starts, two wins, a 1.96 ERA. "You get hit around, you start thinking you have to come up with something else," Bowa said. "That was a tough learning lesson for him, and I'm sure he didn't enjoy it. But I think he would tell you that he learned a lot." True enough. "I did learn a lot," Duckworth said.

"I survived. That was the most difficult season I ever had. But I was able to finish strong. And I went into the offseason as hungry as I've ever been." Duckworth worked with a personal trainer this winter, adding more strength to a 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame. He's been working intently with Kerrigan, who has been pounding home the idea of simplifying his attack.

He's ditched that cutter for good. "I can already see the difference," Duckworth said. Duckworth was 3-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 2001, and seemed on the verge of stardom. But last season, after a 2.37 ERA in his first three starts, everything went south. In a horrifying stretch from July 1-Aug.

29, Duckworth couldn't scratch out a single win and posted a 7.08 ERA. "Here's a guy who went close to two months without a win, and still won eight games," Bowa said. Along the way, Duckworth tried everything more pitches, a personal catcher (Todd Pratt caught Duckworth exclusively for about two months), less pitches, a stint in the bullpen. He now believes he's gotten all that out of his system, and he'll bounce back strong in 2003. The Phillies need him; if Duckworth and Myers step up the way the Phillies hope, their rotation could be good enough to compete for the division title.

"I went through a lot last year," Duckworth said. "Everybody tried to help, which I appreciated. I learned a lot from it Now it's up to me." Baseball Calendar Through Feb. 20 Salary arbitration hearings. Feb.
