COURIER-POST, Saturday, September 18, 200 3V VARSITY FOOTBALL West Deptford attack too much for Sterling Yr A Ut ft backers Donisi and John Brow-nell completely bottled up the Sterling offense, limiting it to a minus-four yards in the first half as the Eagles built a 35-0 lead. West Deptford scored 21 of its points in the first quarter as Dave Maxwell, Young and Donisi powered their way into the end zone and Jake Brownell added three of his seven extra points. When Young scored with 11:51 left in the second quarter to make it 28-0, the game was over. "I don't think anyone expected us to jump to that 28-0 lead as quickly as we did," Mullin said. "Sure, we're not as big as last year's team but we're quicker and stronger than last year.

I think we all expected to be a pretty good team this year. We have a ways to go, but we got off to a pretty good start in the first two weeks." After two impressive games on the road to start the season, the Eagles get to strut their stuff in front of the hometown fans next week against neighboring Woodbury. On Friday night, the Eagles (2-0) put on simply an awesome display of both offense and defense as it punished Sterling for the 11th straight time by rolling to a 49-0 victory in a Colonial Conference Liberty Division game. It was the 15th straight victory for the Eagles and the 25th in their last 26 games.

They scored on their first four pos-' sessions of the game in building a 28-0 lead by the first nine seconds of the second quarter. "Things broke right for us all night," West Deptford coach Clyde Folsom said. "We had a few short fields to negotiate early in the game and we were able to get that quick start. "We are not a big team but we are quick. I think our speed came into play very early in the game." The Eagles, No.

Our offensive line was' tremendous tonight and made it very easy for the running backs." The defensive line was pretty good, too.

Merf Trout compared Gloucester Catholic's 35-21 victory Friday night over Will-iamstown with throwing someone a rope who was about to loose his grip climbing at the top of the cliff. "It was a little scary at half-time," said Trout, who scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on the tail end of a 28-point unanswered run by the Rams. "I was just one of many who tossed the rope that enabled us to come back and win this one. It was a team effort. The offensive line, the defensive line, fullback Joe Rucupero's blocking and quarterback Brett Conway held us together." Williamstown carried a 21-14 lead into the final quarter of this Tri-County Conference Royal Division matchup on the strength on some tough running by Steve Roane, Walt Sampson and Aaron Jones.

Trout's subsequent kickoff landed at the Williamstown 1-yard line, where it was bobbled and returned to the 2. The Braves never really got out of the hole. Carmen Maglio, a thorn in Williamstown's side all night from his nose guard position, recovered a Braves' miscue at the Williamstown 20 and it took the Rams only three plays to take the lead. Trout rushed for nine yards, Recupero took it to the 3. Trout then knifed across with 6:57 remaining.

"That's what we talked about at halftime," Trout said. "We had to keep running, blocking and defending. It all came together and it worked out." "I'm so happy all the hard work is paying off." The victory over the Wildcats wasn't nearly as contested as last Saturday's 22-20 win over Camden, but the Eagles aren't so used to winning where they don't feel great about every victory. Especially since the Eagles came into this year just 4-65 in their last six-plus seasons and 12-137-1 since 1988.
