From previous column trial worker. However, working at B.

F. Goodrich building airplane fuel cells, fire hoses and hot water bottles was not her "calling." The blessing of being "laid-off" lead to her discovery that what she loved the most was being a involved in children's' lives. She was able to fulfill that, first, by serving as a nanny for several affluent families with preschool children and then with the Akron Health Department as a Nurse Assistant teaching hygiene to children. When an opportunity was available to become more in involved in early childhood development, Thelma joined the staff of Akron Public Schools' Head Start Program. Thelma's enthusiasm, for helping children develop, compelled her to continue working beyond the normal retirement age.

She did not apply for Social Security until she was 78-years-old, when she retired from the ASCA Head Start Program. But, she did not stop working, she only diverted to ASCA's Foster Grandparent Program for the next 10 years before finally retiring to devote more time on her craft of making ceramics. While Thelma spent many hours working, she always found time for her lifelong love of bowling. She was a team member in several bowling leagues and along with Lee Ann Harris, she integrated Goodrich Lanes becoming the 1st black women in a white league. In keeping with her love of children she gave many young bowlers their first bowling lessons.

She enhanced those informal lessons when she became a founding member of the Akron TNBA Senate Junior Bowling Program. Active in other sports, Thelma was a member of the Akron Rhythm Bar Women's Baseball Team and played in B. F. Goodrich's Women's Basketball League. Thelma was also politically active and campaigned for candidates: Marco Sommerville, Vernon Sykes, Ed Davis, Bernard Rosen and Leo Berg.

After 94 years Thelma declared openly that she was weary and prayed that the LORD would lift her spirit, which HE did on Wednesday, March 30, 2016. Having joyful remembrances of her lofty spirit will be her son, Nathan Gamble; granddaughter, Jennifer L. Gamble; brother, Harold E. Brake; nephews, Brian Brake (Susan), Kevin Brake (Brenda) and Darryl Brake (Yvonne); and nine grandnephews and grandnieces and 25 great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces; extended family and many special friends. When "Little Nate" attended school she was actively involved in his education. Thelma, an unflagging member of the PTA, never missed a PTA meeting nor a Parent-Teacher meeting.

Her zeal for her son's education included unannounced drop-in visits to his classrooms. "Nate there's your mother" was often announced to her embarrassed son. Thelma shared with many that she had lived a very happy, active life.
