The 4-pound test line went taught and then began stripping from the spinning reel which buzzed as the drag gear yielded line. A hybrid was on, and his fight was strengthed by the Pearl River current. Against the ultralight tackle, the fish felt like a monster even though it wouldn't measure up to keeper status. But there is no size limit when it comes to having fun; not if you outfit yourself with the proper equipment for the size fish you'll be catching. Go with light or ultralight tackle and there is no limit to the entertainment these laboratory-produced fish can provide.

The hybrids, a cross between white and striped bass, have been stocked in the Barnett Reservoir system since 1983. These fish are considered sterile and do not reproduce, but each spring they make a spawning run up the Pearl River and congregate in certain areas between Ratliff Ferry and the Low-head Dam. When the surface temperatures begin warming into the high 50s and low 60s, the hybrids start their journey. The small hybrids show up first and the bigger mature fish arrive a few weeks later. In most years, the migration begins from mid- to late March.

They will stay upriver for about two months. This year, with the warm weather arriving early, the hybrids moved early. The small hybrids have been up river for over two weeks. The big fish have yet to arrive en masse. Small hybrids, ranging in length from 10 to 14 inches, are ravenous eaters.

They feed constantly, which works heavily in the favor of fishermen. No exotic or expensive lures are required. All that is needed is a weighted lead-head jig and a 2-or 3-inch white grub worm with a curl tail. The shutout was the fifth this season by coach Bill Merchant's pitching staff. Louisiana Tech fell to 7-10. Delta State got the only run it needed in the top of the first inning when center fielder Bobby Picou singled and scored on right fielder Rick Collier's double. Left fielder Michael Cudd had a two-run double in the top of the seventh to give DSU a 3-0 lead. Kelly Dickson led off the eighth with a double, stole third and scored on Picou's sacrifice fly.

Guerriero, 4-2, pitched 6V3 innings, scattering three hits. Brown came on to register his fifth save as he inherited a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Canseco had anchored near a beach club and swam ashore to play. After the match, he spotted someone hiding behind his boat's console. But the engine wouldn't start, giving Canseco time to call police, who responded with a helicopter and boat. The man in the boat was charged with attempted grand theft, said Miami Beach police spokesman Jim Hyde. Canseco had anchored near Pen-rod's Beach Club.

"He swam in to play volleyball," Hyde said. About 6 p.m., Canseco quit. He spotted someone hiding behind the boat console. Canseco called police, who responded quickly Metro Dade police with a helicopter, Miami Beach police with a boat. The Florida Marine Patrol responded, too.

Steinbrenner worried: George Steinbrenner is wor- ried about the baseball lockout, and the New York Yankees owner thinks the union is making too much of the plight of two-year players. "They're babies. Most of them still shave with a washcloth," he said Monday in a telephone interview from Tampa, Fla. "I don't mean they're actually babies, but they're still coming into the game. They average $222,000 a year.

That's almost as much as the president of the United States. More. And here's General Colin Powell, the No. 1 military man in the world, and he makes $77,000 a year." The Yankees have a 12-year, $485 million television contract with the Madison Square Garden Network, so they have more to Ipse than any other club. Steinbrenner said he's concerned that past victories by players over owners have convinced union chief Donald Fehr that the owners will From Wire Service Reports MBA ness of the river current, jig weights should range from 14-ounce (light current) to 12-ounce (swift current).

When a school of small fish is located, it is likely to hold hundreds of fish and the action is constant. Catches of 50 to 100 a day are common. To lessen the harm to the fish, which must be released, use pliers to mash down the barb of the hook. This allows the fish to be released with a simple flip of the hook and without having to be handled. It also allows for a quick release which puts you immediately back into action.

Ultralight spinning reels and rods are ideal when only the small fish are present, spooled with 2-pound or 4-pound line. Be sure to set the reel's drag just under the breaking-strength of the line. When big fish are present, put the light stuff away and switch to your normal bass tackle. These fish can range from 2 to 12 pounds and have broad sides, which provide them with great power. James Worthy scored 26 points and the Los Angeles Lakers took advantage of a fourth-quarter lapse by the Charlotte Hornets Monday night for a 107-102 victory at Charlotte, N.C. It was the Lakers' fourth straight win. After taking an 87-79 lead at the end of the third quarter on 57 percent shooting, Charlotte went cold, hitting just one field goal in 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the Lakers went on a 20-6 run capped by Byron Scott's layup off a turnover with 3:10 left for a 99-93 lead.

The teams traded baskets before Robert Reid's 3-pointer with 54 seconds left got the Hornets to within 101-98. Parish, injured early in the second quarter of a 107-105 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Garden, was not expected to travel to Atlanta, where the Celtics face the Hawks tonight, nor the trip to Dallas for a game Wednesday night against the Mavericks, spokesman Jeff Twiss said.
