COMING UP Luteinizing hormone is produced in hourly pulses. Even though the men runners produced lower than usual levels of the hormone, their testosterone production seemed to be normal. Moroccan track star Said Aouita established a year's best over 3,000 meters in 7 minutes, 32.54 seconds, and came tantaliz-ingly close to breaking Henry Rono's record in the IAAF Mobil Grand Prix meet in Zurich, Switzerland. Aouita ran the second-fastest 3,000 meters ever after Rono's 7:32.1, set on June 27, 1978 in Oslo, Norway. Much further away from securing a third personal world record was Norway's Ingrid Kristiansen, though she also established this year's best performance for women with 8:34.10 minutes.

Also, Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson continued his winning streak in the 100 meters, defeating American rival Carl Lewis outdoors for the third time this year. Johnson, whose 9.95-second mark at the Goodwill Games in Moscow was the world's best at an altitude below 1,000 meters, ran 10.03. Nigeria's Chidi Imoh took second, 19 hundredths of a second behind. Lewis, the quadruple Olympic champion at Los Angeles, was third in equal time with Bolton's Calvin Smith, who has held the 100-meter world record of 9.93 for more than three years. I Vrdinand contender Ferdinand, the Kentucky Derby winner! and Tasso, winner of last year's Eclipse Award, head a list of 43 horses named as possible contenders for the $500,000 Super Derby, to be run Sept.

20 at Louisiana Downs, in Bossier City, La. Ferdinand, trained by Charles Whit-tingham, or Tasso, handled by Neil Drysdale, could become the first millionaire to run in the IV4 -mile race. Five of the six previous Super Derby victors became millionaires or went on to push their earnings to seven figures with their From Wire Reports Male marathon runners may experience hormonal disruptions similar to those that cause temporary infertility in female athletes, a new study shows. For men, however, there is no evidence that these hormonal upsets are severe enough to interfere with their sex drives or fertility. "We know that in women, severe exercise and marathon running will disrupt their menstrual cycles, but it hasn't been proven that it can also have an effect in men," said Dr.

Inese Z. Beitins, one of the researchers. "We were interested to see whether there was a male-female difference, or whether similar changes occurred in men." They found that as in women athletes, the men had lower than usual production of luteinizing hormone. In men, this hormone is part of a chemical chain reaction that ultimately leads to the release of testosterone, the primary male hormone. Here and lliere Undefeated Philadelphia heavyweight Tyrell Biggs, the Olympic gold medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, will fight Rod Smith of Porltand, tonight as the co-featured bout at Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum with the Mustafa Hamsho-Richard Burton middleweight fight.

Hasmsho, ranked ninth by the World Boxing Council, has a 40-3-2 record with 24 knockouts while the younger Burton is 12-2 with 10 knockouts. They said it Houston reliever Charlie Kerfeld, after picking off the Dodgers' Steve Sax on Tuesday night: "Shoot, I never pick guys off. But I was watching this purple ball they were playing with in the stands, and I figured Sax was looking, too. Sure enough, he was." Braves Booster Club: First-year Alcorn State athletic director and football coach Theo Danzy and members of his coaching staff will be guests at a pep rally for Alcorn alumni and fans Saturday at Ceasor's Palace, 2645 Livingston Road. The meeting will begin at 9 p.m.
