Saturday, unc 1 1, la The Cbrion-Lt(tRt-rjkson Daily News 3D Flames' Nieuwendyk heads rookie team; North Stars have top pick SPORTS DIGEST From Wire Reports Joe Nieuwendyk of the Calgary Flames, the league's top rookie scorer, headed the 1987-88 NHL All-Rookie Team announced Friday in Montreal. Nieuwendyk, a center who led all rookies with 92 points on 51 goals and 41 assists, also led the league in power-play goals with 31 and finished third in game-winners with eight. He was joined by two players from Buffalo right wing Ray Sheppard and defensemarr Calle Johansson, Chicago goaltender Darren Pang, Boston defenseman Glen Wesley and Winnipeg left wing Iain Duncan. Duncan and Wesley became the first representatives from their respective teams to be named to the squad, which is selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association based on regular-saason performance. have the first pick after posting the league's worst record.

The Vancouver Canucks, who pick No. 2, are expected tp take whoever is left. Mike McHugh, a forward from the University of Maine, was the top selection as NHL teams picked 26 players in a supplemental draft. McHugh was selected by the Minnesota North Stars. All 26 players played on U.S.

college teams last year and had not been previously drafted. McHugh scored 29 goals and 37 assists in 44 games for Maine last year and was the only player from his school taken in the draft. Here ami there American Charles Williams retained his International Boxing Federation light heavyweight crown by stopping France's Richard Caramanolis in the 11th round of a sched uled 15-round bout in Annency, France. It was the first defense for Williams, 26, who won the title from Bobby Czyz last October. Williams is 23-4-2.

Caramanolis is 35-3-2. Bob Brodhead, fired two years ago by LSU after four years of turmoil at that school, said he's thrilled to be getting back into college athletics as acting athletic director at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La. Thev said it U.S. Olympic men's basketball coach John Thompson, on the Americans' chances for a gold medal this year: "We're definitely capable of repeating (the 1984 success in Los Angeles). But we can't just walk out on the floor and assume we're going to win We have got to make our kids very aware of the fact that we're not going to a house party." Nieuwendyk, 21, finished second on on the all-time rookie goal-scoring list behind Mike Bossy's 1977-78 mark of 53.

In a talent pool that's not expected to be very deep, a high-scoring forward is likely to be the No. 1 pick in today's NHL draft. The only question is which one Mike Modano or Trevor Linden? "I don't see much difference between them," said Edmonton Oilers scout Barry Fraser. Modano, a native of Livonia, is generally considered the most skilled player in the draft. But Linden is also an offensive threat and is regarded as a better two-way player.

They're clearly recognized as the top two players available. One will be taken by the Minnesota North Stars, who HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STAR GAMES; Reid, Vann among 17 inducted into Hall North vows Softball win FOOTBALL From Special and Wire Reports Mike Reid, best known for his country music writing successes since his days as a college and pro football star, headed a group of 17 former players and coaches inducted Friday night in Kings Mills, Ohio, into the College Football Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame also inducted three former college coaches. They were Thad "Pie" Vann of Southern Mississippi; Bob Blackman of Denver, Dart-, mouth, Illinois and Cornell; and Dave Nelson of Hillsdale, Maine and Delaware. Reid, a former Penn State star who later Pitching will decide 3A-2A-1A Rosters, 2D By CLAY HARDEN Staff Writer Pitching will be of paramount importance when the North and South collide in the Class 3A-2A-1 A Mississippi High School All-Star baseball game at 7 p.m.

today at Smith-Wills Stadium. "The difference will be pitching," said North coach Ralph Bruce of Shannon. "All these kids are here because they can hit the baseball and play good defense." South coach Sonny Pisarich of Mercy Cross also put pitching at the head of his list, but added "the team that makes fewer mistakes and hits the ball better will win." The South will likely start Mike Dumas of Forrest County AHS. Dumas was 9-5 with a 1.93 ERA, but also hit .476 with 1 1 home runs and 27 RBIs as a senior. The North will go with either Travis England of Calhoun City (6-3, 2.50) or Michael McNeer of Riverside (9-3).

Both have pitching depth. The South will call on Brad Teague of St. Andrew's (13-3, 1.35), Clifford Howard of Waynesboro (8-4, 2.62) and Kette Dornbush of St. Aloysius (9-3, 0.91) and the North Frederick Emery of Simmons (10-4), Shane Taylor of Alcorn Central (16-1) and Tony Donald of Mooreville (18-1, 1.75). Listed to start in the field for the South are: catcher Karsten Simrall of St.

Aloysius (.529, 6 HRs, 36 RBIs); first baseman Randy Rouse of Stone County (.450, 9 HRs, 40 RBIs); shortstop Lincoln Gumbs of Piney Woods (.420, 2 HRs, 18 RBIs); second baseman Stan Sasser of Bogue Chitto (.409, 6 HRs, 18 RBIs); center fielder Anthony Barney of North Forrest (.350, 1 HR, 17 RBIs); third baseman Howard (.581, 5 HRs, 22 RBIs); left fielder Dornbusch (.481,4 HRs, 36 RBIs), right fielder Teague (.530, 6 HRs, 38 RBIs) and designated hitter Bryant Herrien of Stone County (.520, 6 HRs, 36 RBIs). Starting for the North are: catcher Jimmy Thompson of Shannon (.514, 12 HRs); first baseman Walt Willis of Amory (.357, 8 HRs, 36 RBIs); second baseman Willie Seals of Simmons.510, 15 HRs); shortstop Scott Sitton of Alcorn Central (.358, 28 RBIs, 57 stolen bases); third baseman Flint Northcutt of Corinth right fielder Kelly Monts of Shannon (.360, 6 HRs); center fielder Ben Anderson of Pontotoc (.320, 8 HRs) left fielder Taylor (.362, 8 HRs, 52 RBIs) and designated hitter Tommy Dukes of Pontotoc (.425, 6 HRs). North well-armed for 5 A4A contest Rosters, 2D Bv BILL SPENCER Staff Writer From listening to the coaches for today's Class 5A-4A Mississippi High School All-Star baseball game, one gets the impression the North has a monstrous pitching advantage for the 2 p.m. contest at Smith-Wills Stadium. North coaches Don Brantley of Louisville and Leroy McClain of Horn Lake intend to start Starkville's Jason Williams, who recorded a school-record 16 victories this season.

One of Williams' wins came against Thomasville, pitcher Reid Cornelius a Mississippi State Montreal Expos draft pick and the nation's top high school pitching prospect according to Baseball America. While an All-Star rule limits pitchers to three innings, the North is well-equipped with Callaway's Nick Buchanan, Northwest Rankin's David Smith, New Hope's Brad Skeen and Starkville's Bradley Taylor. Including Williams, they combined for 58 victories this season. "We have five pitchers who can start," said McClain Friday afternoon. "We don't have a pitcher who is going to be real dominating and strike out a lot of people." The absence of two pitchers Gulfport's Tom Luke and Biloxi's Demetrius Jones has created a predicament for South coaches Roland Gatlin of West Jones and Mario Genna of d'Iberville.

Luke was scratched from the game because of his participation in next week's Mississippi-Alabama High School All-Star football game in Mobile, Ala. Jones failed to report Thursday and wasn't replaced. As a result, the South will primarily look to Pascagou-la's Chris O'Brien and Long Beach's Matt Crosby. Also available are South Natchez's Jason Simmons, Forest Hill's Lennon Leggett, Wingfield's Randall Hutton, West Jones' Kenny Pierce and d'Iberville's Chad Hebert. "We're in serious trouble with the format of this game," said Genna.

"The North is kind of stacked and we've been left in poor shape. In a nine-inning ballgame, pitching depth is very important. "We were counting on Jones. He went 13-0 and beat Starkville for the 5A state championship." Tickets are $3 each. Children under 6 will be admitted free.

Gates open at noon. VANN Rosters, 2D By ROBERT WILSON Staff Writer Christi Bailey sees an end to the South's domination of the Mississippi High School All-Star girls sof tball game. The South has swept both best-of-three series, including last year's 17-7, 16-3 blowout. It won't happen again, says Bailey. "We (the North) have a tremendous amount of talent," said Bailey, who led Pearl to a 12-0 record and was the Most Valuable Player in the Jackson Public Schools Division I tournament.

"Every girl must play six innings and we have a versatile team. We'll have the edge there. And we are quicker, too. Our defense is sound we've got some guns. I believe we can score six or seven runs a game." The third annual contest begins today at 4 p.m.

at Mississippi College's Frierson Field in Clinton. Ocean Springs' Jack Hughes, who will coach the South with Moss Point's Brenda Lewis, agrees today's game won't be a runaway. "It will be a better game. The North has some good players," Hughes said. "But we do, too.

Our defense is strong up the middle. We are sure of an out with Donna Carr, second baseman Tammy Winstead (both from Pascagoula), center fielders Lori Rush (of East Central) and Cassandra Hayes (of Moss Point) and pitcher Bridget Brum-field (of Moss Point) up the middle." "I've got a good feeling this team will make things happen," said Tupelo's Michelle Prince, who will coach the North with Mendenhall's James Crain. "We've got several players who can hit the ball hard." deceased. They are Mike McKeever of Southern Cal, Bob Westfall of Michigan and Tommy Yarr of Notre Dame. Inductees for the College Football Hall of Fame are chosen on the basis of their collegiate careers and the accomplishments they have made since the end of their playing days.

The National Football Foundation operates the Hall of Fame, located about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. Police in the Dallas suburb of Addison, Texas, jailed Dallas Cowboys defensive end Ed "Too Tall" Jones Friday on investigative charges of public lewdness. Jones, 37, and a woman whose identity was withheld were released from the Addison City Jail on a writ of habeas corpus early Friday, Addison Police Chief Rick Sullivan said. He said the pair were arrested in a business parking lot for investigation of public lewdness. Two officers observed suspicious activity behind a tavern and claimed that Jones and a woman were involved in an public act determined to be lewd, said Sullivan.

He said the 28-year-old woman also was arrested for investigation of public intoxication. "The incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed," said Sullivan. Georgia tailback Tim Worley says he has passed all of his spring quarter classes and is expected to be eligible for the 1988 season. Worley, who attempted 17 credit hours in the spring quarter, would need to pass six more hours in summer school to reach the 36-hour requirement for the school year. excelled as a Cincinnati Bengals tackle, planned to perform some of his hit country songs at Friday nighfs reception and banquet at the Hall.

He also had a .938 slugging percentage. "Brad is a control pitcher," said St. Andrew's coach Mike Barkett. "His percentage of strikes is way up in the 80s. He's able to put the ball where he wants it.

He's going to throw more strikes than balls. Brad's not going to walk two men and give up a cheap hit to hurt you." Jeppesen led the 22-5 Tornadoes to a 2A state playoff berth, hitting .418 with eight doubles, five triples, six homers, a team-high 32 RBIs, 37 runs and 23 stolen bases. As a pitcher, he was 5-3 with a 2.10 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 44 innings. "Elgin played the role of a leader," said Piney Woods coach John Neal. "He got the job done.

Whatever it took, he did it." Percell hit a team-high .546 with six doubles, five triples, a team-high 10 homers, 25 RBIs, 36 runs and 15 stolen bases. In addition to his slick fielding skills, Gumbs hit .420 with 10 doubles, one triple, two homers, 18 RBIs and a team-high 48 runs and 38 stolen bases. As a pitcher, he was 4-0 with a 3.70 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 36 innings. He is Piney Woods' first All-Star Game participant. "Lincoln has excellent lateral movement at shortstop, a quick release and he's pretty strong," said Neal.

"The key thing I like about him in that position is his mechanics." Prep coach Mike Kinnison numbered the reasons Mardis was the MVP for the Academy Class AAA runner-up Patriots. "Todd was always ready to play every game," said Kinnison, whose Patriots went 27-5. "He led us in four categories. He is deserving of this honor." Mardis led Prep with a .381 batting average, 10 homers, 54 RBIs and his 2.47 ERA was the lowest among the starters. Mardis was 8-2, including a 2-1 loss to Greenville Washington in the title game.

Bankston hit .379 with five doubles, two triples, three homers, a team-high 24 RBIs and 23 runs and helped the 11-10 Tigers to a 4A state playoff appearance. "Chris hit .180 a year ago, but he learned to be patient at the plate and learned how to hit the curve the opposite way," said Jim Hill coach Jerry Gibson. Washington hit .400 with five doubles, two triples, four homers and 21 RBIs. A left fielder, he will move to pjtcher and possibly shortstop next season for the Chargers.
