LEDGER From Staff and Wire Reports Welfare chief may be named today The state Welfare Board today is expected to appoint a new welfare commissioner to replace former Commissioner Donald Roark, who was ousted by the board without explanation last October. Marcia Carlson of the state Research and Development Center, who spearheaded the search for a new commissioner, said more than 100 people applied for the job to head the $163 million agency.

Carlson said 15 finalists were interviewed for the $45,000 commissioner's post, including nine applicants from out of state and seven who have served as heads of state welfare departments in the past. "We had an excellent group of candidates," she said. The new commissioner will take over an agency that has been plagued by criticism since the murder of Pope teenager Paula Houston last June. Houston's mother, Judy Lane Houston, was convicted in December of strangling her daughter. Critics of the Welfare Department have said Paula Houston's death might have been prevented if reports of suspected abuse of the teenager had been investigated properly.

The agency is slated to reorganize and place new emphasis on child abuse complaints beginning in July. MADD donates $400 to Jackson police The Capital Area Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving will present a check for $400 today to the Jackson Police Department for the purchase of a generator for a Breathalyzer. Faye Case, chapter president, said MADD will present the check to Deputy Chief Don Bartlett at 11:30 a.m. at the police department. The new generator will replace a broken one that hasn't been replaced because of the budget squeeze, she said.

With the new generator, department will have three Breathalyzers. The devices are used to measure the amount of alcohol in a person's system. Mississippi 25 to open to four-lane traffic Mississippi 25 is scheduled to open to four-lane traffic from Mississippi 475 to Mississippi 471 today, Highway Department officials said. Ribbon -cutting ceremonies will be held by the Rankin County Chamber of Commerce at 11 a.m. on the new lanes south of the Mississippi 471 interchange.

Central District Highway Commissioner Sam W. Waggoner said remaining work, including intermittent resurfacing of existing lanes, will be completed during the next few weeks. The 6.9-mile project should be completed in late June at a cost of $5.9 million, he said. 2 men killed in separate car accidents A New Albany man and a Eupora man were killed Sunday in separate one-car accidents, the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported. Grady Mayo, 37, of New Albany died in a one- car accident at the Prentiss and Tippah county line about five miles south of Jumpertown.

The cause of the accident, which occurred at 1:30 p.m., is under investigation. Joe Thern Ray, 47, of Eupora died when his car ran off Mississippi 9 in Choctaw County, a patrol spokesman said. The accident occurred about 2:55 a.m., he said. On Saturday, an Oakland man died in a two- icle accident on U.S. 51 in Panola County.

He was identified as John E. Kennedy, 50. Troopers said the driver of the other vehicle, 29-year-old Clayde M. Melton of Como, was charged with failure to yield. Public meetings this week Executive Branch Committee of Constitution Study Commission 10 a.m.
