Saturday, October W85 The CUriorledgerJadison Dairy News 3D COLLEGE FOOTBALL jsu Faust might be asked to resign The Associated Press NEW YORK Notre Dame football coach Gerry Faust might be asked to resign before the end of the season if the Irish lose their next two games, the New York Times reported Friday. Quoting an unidentified university administration source, The Times said the school wants time, if Faust quits, to find a coach before the recruiting season begins in mid-December. Notre Dame, off to its worst start since 1962, is 1-3 this season and plays 5-0 Army in South Bend, today. Faust, who came to Notre Dame from Moeller High in Cincinnati, is in the final year of a five-year contract. With a 26-23-1 record, he is one loss away from becoming the football coach with the most defeats in Notre Dame history.

He shares the record with the late Joe Kuharich, who coached from 1959 to 1962. "Even if he wins the seven games left, that five-year record does not warrant retaining Faust," The Times quoted its source as saying. "I would think he'd have to voluntarily step down if we lost to Army and Southern California in our next two games." If he doesn't, the source said, Faust might be asked to quit about two or three weeks before the season ends. In that case, the plan calls for athletic director Gene Corrigan to submit three names to both the president and vice president of the university for their final approval, The Times said. Corrigan did not return telephone calls Friday, and there was no comment from Notre Dame on the Times report.

Faust told The Times he knew nothing about the plan, but he did acknowledge that his job, which he says is the only one he ever wanted, is in jeopardy. "If we're 5 and 6, 1 don't think I'll be around," he told the Times. "If we win all seven left, it depends on how we play." But he refused to say flatly that a losing record might lead to his resignation, and said that he has not been considering what he might do if he leaves Notre Dame. 'I'm not even worried about that stuff right now. All I'm worried about is getting ready for Army," he said.

"I think the press makes more of it than anybody." Mike Larkin, co-captain and outside linebacker, was quoted recently by the Cincinnati Enquirer as saying: "I think coaching has a lot to do with your ability to perform on the field. I think we've been tricked; I think we've been outskilled. The other teams score so many points on us, I think first because our offense is not on the field as long as their offense. And also because their plays are less obvious than our plays. They do things that surprise us." The Assoc iated Press Gorden, from ID not where we would like to be, but the (preseason) pollsters picked us fifth (in the SWAC).

We're ahead of schedule there considering we're 2-1 in the conference." It took all of three moves the past week to help the Tigers along. The defensive backfield saw freshmen Kevin Dent and Robert Abrams get starts and Shannon Boyd was inserted at quarterback. The moves have garnered immediate results. "As goes our passing defense and our passing offense, so goes the football team in terms of success and failure," Gorden said. "I was very impressed with (Shannon) Boyd Saturday.

If he keeps improving we'll improve offensively. "Defensively, personnel changes in the secondary improved us in that area as well. However Florida is not a passing team. Southern will throw the ball. I still feel we're a couple of more positions weak in the secondary at linebacker and defensive back than I would like.

We can match up two more positions, but we're reluctant to go into our freshman class. Those kids seem to be better athletes. They seem to be more emotionally mature than the ones we're playing in that area." With five games left, Gorden has as he has throughout the season an upbeat outlook. He saw some good things over the first five weeks that he wants to carry over into tonight and the four following contests. "We look good the rest of the way," said Gorden.

"The Florida game didn't solve all our problems but there was improvement. "This is a very big ballgame for us. (It's) not an embarrassment to be where we are especially considering the teams we lost to." Gerry Faust is skating on thin ice at Notre Dame. Iowa, Michigan battle for Big Ten, national supremacy Most Missourians might have their minds elsewhere. For one thing, the Missouri football team is 0-5.

But most importantly, the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals are playing the first game of the all-Missouri World Series tonight in Kansas City's Royals Stadium. Whether Nebraska victimizes coach Woody Wi-denhofer's winless football team may not worry many people in the state this year. Army's Cadets, ranked 19th and off to their best start in 35 years, will be seeking to make Notre Dame their sixth victim this season when the two teams collide today. The Cadets are off to a 5-0 start, their best since 1950.

Notre Dame, is 1-3 and off to its worst start since 1963. his playing, therefore, "would not subvert the rule." Four former TCU football players said they planned to interview with the NCAA next week in its continuing investigation of the school. The four received a written guarantee from TCU Thursday that their full scholarships will continue until 1987. The former players, Egypt Allen, Marvin Foster, Gary Spann and Gearld Taylor, said they will cooperate fully with the NCAA investigation. The army of fans Nebraska's football team always brings to its game against Missouri in Columbia may be offended at the indifference shown by Missourians this year.

From Wire Reports Iowa's No. 1-ranked football team has a golden opportunity today to prove its coach is wrong. The Hawkeyes play second-ranked Michigan, the team Iowa coach Hayden Fry says should be No. 1 because of its rugged defense and impressive showing against a tough schedule. The winner today probably will have a solid grip on No.

1 in next week's ratings. The victor also will have an early edge in the race for the Big Ten Conference championship and the reward that goes with it a trip to the Rose Bowl. The game can be heard locally on radio station WYHT-AM (1590) beginning at 1:35 p.m., CDT. U.S. District Judge Neal McCurn upheld the NCAA's "redshirt" rule, ending the 1985 football season for Cornell University junior Tom McHale.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end sought to play this season for the Big Red although he had not been on the Cornell campus a full calendar year, as required by the NCAA. The national organization adopted the rule decades ago to keep players from jumping from school to school. However, McHale left the University of Maryland after the 1983-84 school year not to play in a better program, but to enroll in Cornell's acclaimed School of Hotel Administration. He was accepted last fall and enrolled in January 1985. McHale argued that he was not recruited and that MSU Copiers for People mm $55 Ricoh FT3020 per month State, from ID Tulane has lost to Florida State (38-12), TCU (30-13), Kentucky (16-11), Ole Miss (27-10), Vanderbilt (24-17) and Memphis State (38-21).

Two questions have emerged concerning the teams' regular quarterbacks: No. 1: Will Tulane's Ken Karcher play? As of late Friday, it seemed doubtful. Brown told the New Orleans Times-Picayune Friday Karcher definitely will not start. "I was hoping the soreness would go away, but he can hardly lift his arm," said Brown about Karcher, who injured his right shoulder VERSATILE DEPENDABLE DIAGNOSTICS COMPACT CALL FOR A FREE PEMONSTRAflON Brown said freshman tailback Ter-rance Jones, the team's leading rusher, would replace Karcher. Jones has gained 207 yards on 53 carries and completed 4 of 11 passes for 45 yards.

Question No. 2: How many yards will State's Don Smith gain against Tulane's defense, which is surrendering 408 yards per game? Smith ranks second in total of fense in the SEC (257.7 yards per game), and Brown shudders to think what might happen. "Trying to tackle him is like putting a guy in a hallway, having everybody try and tackle him and nobody can touch him," said Brown. "The guy jumps around, runs everywhere." State has thrown the ball more this season than in the past, but Brown predicted that may change tonight. "Against us, I'm sure they'll line up and try to run it," he said.

"To have a chance, we've got to stop them from running the football." iniTCH 613 SOUTH WEST STREET JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI 39201 601-353-2453 may be the middle of next week before he can throw." USM 17 4 In Stock vored over the Eagles on the remainder of the schedule. Memphis State's road is considerably more rocky. After USM, it's Alabama, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and Army. Just the same, hope springs eternal.

USM coach Jim Carmody calls Memphis State "the best team we will have played other than Auburn." The Tigers, under second-year coach Rey Dempsey, feature a defense that is ranked eighth nationally in total (283.0 yards a game). "They can run," says Carmody particularly the line-backing corps of Octavian Sharp, Tim Harris (6-foot-7, 235), Eric Fairs and David Brandon. End Dennis Borcky, 6-4, 275, is an all-star candidate, as are Harris and Fairs. Three seniors and a junior start in the secondary. Senior quarterback Danny Spark-man is the hub of the Tigers' offense.

He has thrown for 870 yards (76-of-150) and 7 touchdowns. By the time he is through, he will hold most of the school passing records. Dreams, from ID But, folks, there's a bunch of bowls out there these days enough to keep alive the postseason hopes of a passel of average-to-mediocre football teams. If USM and Memphis State wish to remain among the dreamers, a win in tonight's clash at Liberty Bowl Stadium is vital to each. Past failures already have dimmed the prospects of both.

As of Friday morning, no bowl representatives had requested credentials from the Memphis State sports information department. USM comes in 4-2, having lost to the only winning teams on its schedule (Auburn and Mississippi State). Memphis State is a disappointing 2-2-2, having lost to Florida State and Mississippi State and tied Ole Miss and Division I-AA Murray State. Should USM win tonight, it has a firm grip on an 8-3 final record. Only Alabama (at Tuscaloosa Nov.
