Today's deal offers a good example. If South is allowed to play at four hearts, suit preference becomes vital to the defense. Against "bidders," North pushes on to five hearts and the defense problem affects only an trick. North's two diamonds 'was a Jacoby transfer bid asking South to bid hearts a misguided effort. With a seven-card suit, North should jump directly to in hearts.

Doing so denies East his frisky bid of two spades, and North does not have to push to five hearts. (The four-spade game does not succeed.) Against five hearts, East took K-A of spades and wondered which minor to lead to ensure down one. He guessed clubs and when West cashed his ace for one down, East heaved a sigh of relief. "A diamond lead at trick three beats the hand two offered West. "The spade you played on my ace should have indicated suit preference," replied East.

"Establishing dummy's spade jack could hot provide a useful discard place in the weekly Nielsen television ratings, largely on the strength of its Olympics coverage. ABC's broadcasts of Olympics competition on Sunday and of Saturday's opening ceremonies of the Summer Games in Los Angeles were the two top-rated shows of last week, wet ahead of CBS' third-ranked Simon Simon. The Sunday competition received a rating of 24.3 in the A.C. Nielsen Co. survey.

That means 24.3 percent of the nation's 83.3 million homes with television watched the competition. The show drew a 44 percent share of the audience tuned in to television at the time. The opening day ceremonies, a spectacular Hollywood-style show, had a rating of 23.9 and 48 percent of the audience. Sunday's competition included finals in swimming and cycling and opening events for the well-regarded U.S. men's basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams.

ABC's real Olympics surge is expected during the next two ratings periods. ABC had a network average for the week, which ended Sunday for ratings purposes, of 15.5. NBC, which was first the previous week, had 11.3 and CBS had 11.2. The networks say this means that in an average prime time minute 15.5 percent of the nation's homes with television were tuned to ABC. The lowest-ranked program was the NBC new magazine show Summer Sunday, USA.

The five lowest-rated shows in descending order were: ABC's Monday Baseball Pre-Game Show, the CBS movie The Rose, CBS' Four Seasons, CBS' Bugs Bunny special, and NBC's Summer Sunday, USA. The CBS Evening Newskept its longtime lead among news programs with a rating of 10.7. ABC moved into second place with 9.0, and NBC dropped to third with 8.4. Here are the week's 20 top programs: 1.
